how to partitiion a hd

    HI GUYS
    I need to partition my hd into 2 ssegments
    i want music on one partition and only OS ON OTHER
    i want to reformat my hd and only reformat the hd side of it
    is this possible
    would love some advise on where to even start!

    Right.

    If you are going to format your partitions so that you have two blank ones, backup, backup, backup.

    First you'll need to use a partition tool. I recommend GParted, which will boot as a LiveCD. Use this to create two partitions, you'll have to decide yourself beforehand how large you want them. Make sure to format the partition you won't be installing an OS to (if indeed you are installing any) using a file system that you're OS will be able to read. For Windows 2000+, this means FAT32 or NTFS. Anything older, you're looking at FAT32 only (iirc).

    If you're reinstalling your OS, boot from the CD and follow the instructions until you are asked to choose a partition. Pick whichever one you want (probably the smaller of the two) and continue.

    After you boot the OS, you should be able to see the two partitions showing as two seperate HDDs in My Computer. Feel free to work away as you wish.
