Broadband blocking certain webpages

    Hi all

    Having problems with my broadband.
Just got it installed yesterday and it is blocking certain pages on websites.
I can't log onto the Vodafone website to send webtext.
It is coming up with an error message saying:
The connection was refused when attempting to contact www.vodafone.ie.
I can use all the rest of the vodafone website - I just can't log in.
Is there a setting somewhere I need to change?

I am using Cinergi Broadband - one of the smaller companies.

Any help or advice much appreciated.

    Thanks

It's unlikely your broadband is blocking anything, however I have heard of people having similar problems when logging onto secure websites. Vodafone's website in particular has always been a slow donkey of a thing. Cynergi may have a low timeout value set, combine that with Vodafone's slow website and you get timeout troubles. Best thing to do would be contact Cynergi and see if they can change the timeout value for a secure https connection. Can you get on to other secured websites, like a bank or shop checkout?

could easily be a security setting. Are you running Norton at all? I know I had a problem before with Norton and secure sites. Basically, I couldnt get into any secure webpages..thats norton for you tho

If you have a router or modem, see if it allows you to lower the MTU setting. It's prob set at auto or 1500. Try changing it to 1492, 1460 or 1380. See if that helps. Deco's comment about norton affecting is not a bad one either.

    Thanks for all the suggestions!!

    OK Norton is disabled.
Can't log into AIB online banking either.
I'm afraid of messing with the modem settings - will it mess it up?
I might contact Cynergi to ask them - hopefully they can help
Its my sisters pc this is affecting.
I have broadband at home, same company, same modem and don't have the problem - strange one!

    Anything else I can try??

It won't mess it up. If it doesn't fix problem just go back and return it to its original value. What model of modem is it? If you tell me that I'll talk you thru changing MTU.

Sounds like an MTU prob. Doesn't effect everyone but does occur from time to time. I'll see if I can get a link to more info.

Edit: This page has good info on MTU and its effect.

Cool thanks Irlrobins and Jor_el and antodeco.

    Its a voyager 210
Not sure if thats enough info....

IrlRobins - cheers for the web link - just reading it now!

Ok I presume the default ip of the 210 is 192.168.1.1. In which case click this link: http://192.168.1.1 Hopefully this will take you to the config page of the router. Click on ip addressing under advanced. Should be a Box called MTU which is set to 1500. Change it to 1492 and click save.

Restart PC and see if you can access vodafone and other pages now. If not, go back in and try 1460.

check to see if your using a proxy server
and make sure htpps is filled in.

i had this problem before, it sstops you logging into email , banks etc
this unlikly on broadband as you should not have a proxy.
but if you upgraded from dial up, maybe you missed the proxy settings.

or maybe your isp is blocking SSL for some reason.

Was 1400 the first value you tried?
