IE not resolving web pages

    Hi all,

Stuck in a bit of a muddle here. I have a laptop which at the moment can only get to websites by typing in the IP address of the website. I have ran many anti-spyware/malware programs, laptop appears clean. I have also ran a winsock tool which usually sorts out this type of situation but not this one. I have also installed Firefox and I get the same problem. I do get a proper IP address and I have also entered additional DNS entries. I can't ping using the website name either, I have to ping it with the IP address of that website.
The Firewall is disabled so that rules out that as the cause. The hosts file is clean as well. I have also flushed the DNS, cleared the cache and deleted the cookies. I am working off a LAN plus I have also tried connecting via dial up and I get the smae problems.

The funny thing is that Netscape 7.0 was installed on the laptop aswell. Before I ran the winsock tool I was able to use Netscape 7.0 normally, which is very weird seen as though IE and Firefox were working as above. Anyhow, Netscape is not working now ever since I ran winsock.

In Short I can't browse any web pages by typing the the website name.

    Any help would be grateful.

im afraid i have no idea at all, as this is not a area i know a lot about. Maybe your best bet would be to put it in the net/comms sub fora.

    Hi Seamus

When I do a ipconfig /all, the DNS entries that I get back are the eircom DNS numbers, 213.94.190.194 - 213.94.190.236. I have tried the old eircom DNS numbers aswell.

    OK.

Can you ping those DNS servers?

    Open a command prompt.
    Type nslookup
Tell us what "Default server" you get.
type in www.boards.ie and tell us what you get.
If you get a timeout on the above, type in server 194.125.133.10 and hit return.
Then type in www.boards.ie and see if you get anything back.

Default server that I get is dns1.cwm.dublin.eircom.net
    Address: 213.94.190.194

When I typed in www.boards.ie I got the same result as above

I did not get any timeout message

    Same result as what? :)

    Does it respond saying
    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name: www.boards.ie
    Address: 82.195.136.250

    or something similar?

Can you ping website names? Also, if you try "tracert" (traceroute) followed by website name, does it resolve the name and subsequent names in the hops it shows?

Also, what are doing with Winsock?

No I can't ping website names.

Using tracert does not resolve the name. The reply I get is "Unable to resolve target system name www.google.com

Winsock - Sometimes I get a message and I've seen this message in the past with similar problems, the message being, "IE could not open the start page". The Winsock tool has worked for me in the past. It just hasn't worked on this problem.

Read the OP. Another unhelpful comment like that will get you a day's ban as per the charter.

OK sorry. It was just a sarcastic way of asking does he have the same problem with firefox.

Well instead of being a smartarse, read the original post carefully and you'll see he has FF installed.

Fair enough. Didn't see that. Anyways, I was just joking around. I didn't realise we're not allowed to make wise cracks.
