All you need to know is the core duo, core 2 duo and centrinios are the only ones you SHOULD get in a laptop.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to google for proper reviews.

As boards gets bigger the lazy user ratio rockets.

ah yeah. i know that. But i think he was looking for more of a personal answer, from real people. And not a PR team

Unless someone here happens to own about six to ten recently made laptops, he's not going to get a personal answer that has any merit :)

anandtech are quite good, or tomshardware; I bought several PC magazines before deciding on a laptop, and then asked boards users about the specific laptop, and their experiences with it, whether any rumours/complaints had held true for them.

effort = reward, and now I have an excellent machine.

    Intel Pentium M/Centrino - Close 2nd
Intel Core Duo/C2D - The latest and greatest money can buy (for now)
AMD Athlon - Workhorse processor but no designed specifically for laptops.
AMD Turion 64 - Laptop version of above (less power comsumption I believe that AMD Athlon)
Intel Celeron - Budget version Intel chip...you get what u pay for....

    thanks for the replies guys

cult - I see where you're coming from but believe it or not I did google and couldn't find side-by-side comparisons for these processors. If you believe the pr spin each one is the best ever. anti is also correct, I was looking for your experiences/opinions of said cpus. It is not necessary for you to own about six to ten recently made laptops to form opinions on them is it?

In any case, the Pentium M/Centrino and Core Duo/C2D seem to be the best on the market, or at least the most popular, but which one will satisfy my craving for 'bang-for-buck'??
And would there be a noticeable difference between say a Core Duo T2300 1.66 GHz and a Pentium M 740 1.73 GHz??

the first person to say 'oh about 0.07GHz' gets a rubber biscuit
