Dell Rip Off - Accessories

    The Dell Rip-Off

The lead on my adapter was severed so I needed a new one. I checked the website and the inspiron 6000 lead wasn’t listed, only a similar adapter for a 510m. I was fairly sure it would be compatible so I rang dell and told them my requirements. They said I would have to ring another number if I wanted a power lead as dell don’t do them (www.upgradeoptions.com 0800 625 139). I rang the number, told them my needs and they quoted me £66 pounds sterling and £12 pounds delivery (approx. €112). This I felt to be very expensive. I rang back dell and told them I saw an adapter on their Irish website for €47 delivered. My only concern was that this adapter did not have the Inspiron 6000 listed as being a compatible system. The sales person (second person I spoke to) practically ignored my enquiry and then proceeded to give me the number of upgrade options for the second time. I told them I needed to speak with someone in technical and couldn’t understand the fact that if they didn’t do power leads how come you could buy them on their website. I finally spoke to someone in technical who again tried to give me upgrade options number. I said I didn’t want that and just wanted to find out if the product I saw on their website( http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=ie&l=en&s=dhs&cs=iedhs1&sku=450-10506) would be compatible with my system. After a lot of coming and going they eventually confirmed that this would be compatible.

I was really mad, I am sure a lot of people have paid over the odds for goods on recommendations from Dell. I mean it was over double the price. I wonder do Dell have some affiliation with this UK company.

Also, I found the same adapter (new) for around €50 on eBay anyway.
I mean the thought struck me; are they ripping people off who don’t have knowledge and especially those who don’t have the web at hand to check these things. I mean if I just rang Dell up to replace a lead it would have cost me over €110. In the end due to my persistence it only cost €47.

Its the same thing as buying something for €2 in a spar instead of going to another shop and buying it for €1.
