Most tricky Win2k problem ever :(

I installed Win2k Pro SP4 on my Dell Inspirion 4150. Installation seems ok. (done this 3 times now) Plugged in USB key as i have my drivers for the laptop there. Installed chipset drivers. Went on no problems and rebooted the laptop.

Tried to install both the graphics card drivers and it didnt work. Same problem with sound card drivers.

    Get a notifaction msg

    Process:issetup.exe File:\nt\private\ole32\com\dcomrem\st...

    1"pUnkControl incorrect refcnt"

with the options to 'OK' 'Cancel'

then after i click away that msg i get another with 'Isssetup.exe has generated errors and has been closed by windows'

    Same happens in Safemode.

Has anybody any idea what is going on?

I used to install Win2k SP1 always but dont have that CD anymore. That worked always.

Any idea what this problem is about? Driver not being unpackage properbly maybe?

Are you sure it's not IISSetup.exe causing the problem? If so, you could try removing IIS via Add / Remove Programs. If you need to run a web server on the laptop, you could try re-installing it afterwards. If it is isssetup.exe, I don't see any Google entries for it. You may have to try a full install again, or try a different Win2k disk.

IIRC, Isssetup.exe is part of the windows installer (install shield), nothing to do with IIS. Try downloading the latest version of windows installer and see if that makes any difference.

edit: Also try copying the driver installers to your hard disk then running them to make sure they're not corrupt, or if possible download new ones.

    Updated ISS.

Downloaded drivers again and extracted them to a folder and clicked on the Ati setup.

    Exact same problem.

    Anybody got an hunches?

Might go try Linux if we cant figure out whats going on.

Could it be that i am missing some support file for windows like rich text or some other weirdness?

Thanks for the help so far guys.
