Advice on arm bar injury please

    Hi Guys,

i injured my arm recently on the receiving end of an arm bar where i should have tapped earlier. It hurt momentarily at the time but i continued to roll and i didn't feel any worse for it.

However the next morning i could barely move my arm. The outside of my elbow was was very sore when attempting to straighten the arm. I RICE'd it for the first couple of days and there was a defininte improvement. However its been almost 2 weeks since the initial injury and its still a little sore to fully straighten my arm. Certainly couldn't train with it yet and its driving me crazy. :(

I'm sure some of you guys must unfortunately have experienced the same injury and was hoping you could give me some advice on it. How long should i expect to be out of action? Is there anything i can do apart from resting it that could speed up the healing process?

    Thanks in advance,
    Padraic

    Happened me twice.

Turned out, I ripped muscles that sit deep below and under , your outer muscles.

It was that bad, I could not hold a mug of coffee for more than a few secs, before arm would fail. I could not lift my arm more than a few inches from the hanging position

I went to a deep tissue massage specialist. I had about 8 sessions of 5 weeks ish. This guy fixed me real good, but the work he did was very painful. he really dug his fingers way in under my muscles.

He did in weeks what 3 months of physio would have done.

I cannot remember his contact details, but his name is Richie, and he lives in Templeogue, and he is actually a Gardai but does this on the side. I am postiong this info in case someone knows him and can give you his details.

All in all he worked wonders for me, and i highly recommend him.

hey man wats up same thing happened to me in my last fight.. i wud recommend that u get an x-ray just to check and see if there is no major damage. but what i done was rested it for 2 weeks the i started to excersize it by firstly curlinging and extending it. then when i felt comfie i introduced light weights to it after awhile i was able to go heavier it took 6-7 weeks to get back to normal. for some reason my arm seems to be stronger. dont ask me how

Padraic ask your teacher if they can recommend anyone. Sounds like you may have torn your bursa which can be sore. I had my elbow popped once or twic and rest and ice helped as did ibuprofen (advil). If you take 4 at a time it acts as an antiinflammotory.
Also you probably want to build your arms up. I found chair lifts , diamond pushups, scoops(hindu pushups ) and wall handstands very good for strengthening my triceps which i was told were not as developed as my biceps.
this seemed to help a lot.
Also pullups palm out or just arm curls with a barbell.
Wriggle a bit more and tap early:) :)

I wouldn't bother with an xray unless a medical professional asked for one.

    Advanced Phsyio -

What probably happened was that you arm didn't repair properly so there's scar tissue which needs to be removed.

Of course, you could just not get armbarred. And TAP EARLIER!

Hope this was entertaining and informative,
    Colm

    Hi Paidraic,

It sounds like you have torn or severly strained the muscle. I would recommend getting an X Ray in your local A&E just to be sure. Then take some anti inflamatory tablets and rest. Depending on how severe it is it can take up to ten weeks to fully heal. Alternatively you can see a sports injury specialist and they will sort you out with physio in about half the time but this can cost upwards of 70 quid a week.

I had something similar happen a few months ago.

Went back training after about 2 weeks, with a support on my elbow.
Hurt for around 4 - 6 weeks, couldnt bend arm properly etc. Stopped training for 2 weeks, healed a lot, then used the support again for another month or so. All good now..

I would doubt it is a muscular tear.....he would have know all about that had it happened....strain maybe, most likely some minor damage done at the joint to either the muscular tissue of the connective tissue, hence the issue with full extension now.

I suggest you follow Colm advice.

Actually a partial tear would make it very painfull to straighten the arm. An Xray would clarify this situation and would make your next course of action alot clearer. Agree with you that he would have known about it straight away though..i would think it is most likely a bad stain and perhaps a bruised joint

Thats kinda what i'm thinking too.....i also would not expect too much recovery from a tear within 2 weeks, when i tore my Lat....that took ages to stop f*cking killin me!!!!!

    thanks for the replies guys.

I really don't think i've done any major damage as i've torn muscles before and this is not as bad.

I've appointment with physio this evening so hopefully will be back in action sooner rather than later.

Don't worry, from now on someone even mentions the word armbar & i'm tapping :D

Get well soon Padraic. You got to respect the tap. Including the referee :).

And the lollipop goes to :D

Turns out i've strained my lateral medial ligament.

I can expect to be back rolling as soon as i see fit, but physio reckons in a couple of weeks to be sure.

btw I only tapped out twice while he was treating my arm ;)
