US involvement in Israel/Lebanon conflict

Seymour Hersh has written a piece in The New Yorker detailing the Bush administration's prior knowledge of Israel's plans to launch a campaign against Hezbollah in Lebanon.

They viewed it as an opportunity to increase Israel's security and a chance to get a snapshot of how an attack on Iran might develop.

The US was aware of Israel's plans weeks before the kidnapping of the two IDF soldiers and had been waiting for any incident upon which a platform for attack could be based.

Sources in the US intelligence community claim that the US rushed Israel into attacking on the grounds that the longer they waited the less time the Bush administration would have to "evaluate and plan for Iran before Bush gets out of office."

Strikes me as a pretty strong piece. Tough piece to write too with the NYT and others being branded as traitors and lunatic lefties by some politicians and certain cable news networks.

He appeared on CNN yesterday to discuss the story.
