LONDON, Aug 13 (Reuters) - The wife of Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke died on Sunday after a long battle with cancer, the Ryder Cup player's management company said.

Heather Clarke, 39, passed away at 2.15am (0115 GMT) at London's Royal Marsden Hospital.

"Heather's courage and bravery throughout the last two years when she was diagnosed with secondary breast cancer has been an inspiration," Clarke, who is 38 on Monday, said in a statement released by International Sports Management.

"Heather never complained once throughout her ordeal and we will all miss her greatly. She was a wonderful and enormously supportive wife, mother and friend."

Clarke, an 11-time winner on the European Tour, was forced to cut his playing schedule throughout his wife's battle against breast cancer since she was initially diagnosed in 2002.

He last played competitive golf at the British Open at Royal Liverpool Golf Club last month before taking time off to be with his wife and two young sons, Tyrone and Conor.

"I won't play again for the foreseeable future," Clarke said after missing the cut with a second-round 82 at Hoylake last month. "I have no plans to play further at the moment."

Clarke has become a keen supporter of cancer charities and last month auctioned the trophy he won after securing the European Tour's Shot of the Month competition for May to raise funds.

He had already withdrawn from the final major of the year, the PGA Championship to be held at Medinah Country Club in Illinois starting on Thursday.

I believe quite a few of the American golfers have chosen to miss the USPGA major to attend the funeral.

Quite a significant gesture, and shows how highly the 'Clarkes' are thought of on the world golf scene.
