If you're not willing to hand over the cash for a DSLR, and you are determined to go digital for the sake of getting fast results, it looks like it does all the stuff you'd need, with manual settings and a decent range of apertures. But consider how long you think it'll be before you grow out of it, and then you will have to discard it for a DSLR kit, if you get any more serious about photography and want to start printing bigger, too.

For the tech heads - will that have a smaller sensor than the common low end (canon 350D type) DSLR's? How much would the image quality actually suffer for that?

If you buy the fuji ,you will still use it when you buy a DSLR.
I am thinking of buying a camera like it ,that I can pick up anytime and snap away.
Long term to me means buy a fuji then SLR. At least you'll have an idea what Slr to go for .
Slr market seems to be changing ever so rapidly ,it's a bad time I think to buy into a certain market.

Wouldn't it be about the same size as the 350D with the kit lens, like?

If I was going for a p&s I'd want something that could go in a pocket... but then I'd spend the whole time wishing I had the other camera with me for all the shots I'd miss. Or, some people when they buy a p&s end up taking it everywhere and the €€€€€s of kit dies slowly of loneliness, in the spare room. How tragic!

(apologies to the OP for my rambling nonsense)

No, the 5600 is much smaller and lighter than the 350d with a kit lens is going to be.

    Negatives for me (9500 owner)
    - AA batteries (never again - if its anything like the 9500 it will eat them. And I'm using 2500mAh batteries.)
    - lack of command dial to change settings
    - powered zoom
    - noisey above iso400 (I dont like noise though)
    - MF (quickly) next to impossible on a LCD

    Positives
    - long zoom (380mm If I remember correctly)
    - af/mf lock so you cant accidentally switch from one to the other
    - f3.5 @380mm (again If I remember correctly)

Also worth considering may be the Canon Powershot S2 IS.

I had a Fuji S5000 ( same as this but earlier model ) as my one of first digitals , I liked it a lot at the time ,( right up till it got stolen !! ) its a lot smaller and lighter than a DSLR.
The sensor is also smaller , so pixel for pixel this camera will not print as good a picture as a DSLR but its plenty good enough for a beginner , printing easily up to A4

In terms of the megapixels , 5 is absolutely fine , BP is correct though , the thing eats batteries , brought mine to a wedding and used 3 sets of AA's in one day for about 120 or so photos.

It has enough manual controls to keep most amateurs busy but your next one should be a DSLR if you decide to take the hobby further .

I used 2 sets in less than an hour at spraoi! Netting about 200 pictures from the sets. Granted it was dark and the AF lamp was working overtime, but anyway. I'm now ordering another 3 or 4 sets of batteries and a second charger.

I agree that a P&S that you can carry everywhere and use quickly is a boon. My carry everywhere Olympus is quite slow to start up though (compared to the 350D). I don't know what the lag time on the Fuji is but if I was buying one I would consider this an important aspect.
By the way the Lithium battery in the Olympus easily lasts for about 500 shots between charges. I have a spare battery just in case. I bought the spare from a site in Malaga and it seems as good as the original.

good buy imo, good value great to start out on too, a dslr is realistically what you'll want in a year but at least the fuji will keep you busy for a while and its got a good focal lenght so you wont need to be buying new lens etc.
