Cross-border car hire

I want to hire a car and drive from France to Spain.
Is there a company that will let me pick up a car in France and return it in Spain? I tried autoeurope but they won't do it. Hertz allow it, but they're expensive.

Or is it a better option to just swap cars at a border town?

I think Sixt may allow it. I drove from Switzerland to Germany but I did end up returning it to the same place in Switzerland a week later.

Edit: never mind that, I just looked on their website and it won't allow that.

I'm resigned to getting two separate cars now, one in France and one in Spain, and crossing the border on a bus. The price difference is around €500.
Obviously they want to discourage it as otherwise they would end up being stuck with a French registered car in the middle of Spain at the end of the rental.

And the expense of sending it back to France is what they are charging you for.

    Hi!

My solution would be: rented car to the French border, taxi to croos and take another rented car. Cheap. And you can do with Avis or Europcar directly.

They will still hit you with one way rental charges as you are not returning the car to the original hire location.
