DVD Drive problems

I've been noticing this problem for some time now but it's getting more frequent.

When I put a cd/dvd into the drive the cursor changes while it attempts to read the disc and the comp freezes. I reboot with the cd in the drive and I have no prob after that, unless I try another cd. Any idea's what's wrong?

I've ran numerous virus checks etc to see if there was anything but can't find anything.

How old is the DVD ROM? Have you tried a lens cleaner? Is it just one particular cd/dvd or different ones?

It's every cd/dvd. They all work once I reboot with the cd in the drive. Cursor locks and the screen freezes but if I'm listening to music it still plays.l

    What OS?
Test: Turn off Autoplay (One way,in XP: Select an action: "Take no action" and see if you have problems accessing the contents of the disc through My Computer)
    What drive? Check Device Manager.

Try removing the cd/dvd rom from System->Hardware->Device Manager and restart.

The options wondow doesn't appear. The disc is loading and the cursor shows the hour glass, then freezes. I've no problem using the cd once I restart.

    It's XP.

Sorry Ruu, how would removing the dvd rom from the system help?
