Shooting Stars Tonight

Not much notice I know, but appearantly tonight is one of the best nights of the year for shooting stars due to the proximity of a particular group of asteroids or whatnot.

I live in Dublin so not much use to me, but I'm sure some of you less light-polluted types may be able to get some good shots. I think some places are particularly suited to it, I remember being in Rinn in waterford a few years back and seeing loads of the things.

We have a nice, even overcast here in Galway right now.

I have the perfect place for shooting them, but there's a thick thick layer of cloud over the sunny south east known as Waterford. I heard about this date earlier on, and the shots would be really handy for a project I want to shoot.

    Sickened!

I'd love to be at the beach for this.. Brittas was savage, so many more stars are visable.

Then head out to one Youssef, you'll see more than I will!

Feck. When I read the title I thought you had Colin Farrell, Ronan Keating and a few more lined up (against the wall that is). Feck again

It looks like the cloud over Galway is breaking up and will stay clear, so it will be a great night. As I also have my new remote for the camera, I can do long shots.

Sooo, anyone have advice for capturing shooting stars?

f/8 - 11 for about 6 or 7 minutes does for normal stars, but shooting stars, I don't have a clue!

How do you get a 7-minute exposure? Is there a way around the 30 second limit on dSLR cameras?

Cable release my friend! Set the camera on manual, and scroll the shutter speed all the way to bulb. When you press the shutter it keeps it open until you take your finger off it. However, you WILL shake the camera by doing this...so get a cable release! Ebay is usually pretty good for them. Otherwise, 40ish quid in a bricks and mortar shop! :)

Check my night photography on flickr for some long exposures!

And Waterford is totally feicing covered in clouds again. No bloody stars for me :(

It'd have to be the 'bulb' setting, timed with a watch. On the remote, I think you click once to open and again to close.

Just saw this thread now, driving home last night at about 2.40am coming into Wicklow town I saw a shooting star, the sky was quite clear at that time last night. Saw a great one in Spain, they are brilliant to watch.

I think I heard somewhere that there will be another good meteor storm around the end of August.
