Can't Login

    Hi guys,

When I tried to boot my MBP this morning it just hung with the little loading animation. So I booted again in Verbose mode (command-v) and it said that there were blocks unallocated on the HD.
So I booted into Single User mode (command-s) and ran /sbin/fsck fy

After this the machine boots but I can't login! I can't really remember my user name but I've tried everything. In single user mode I checked the location of my home folder and its /Users/psb

So I tried logging in with that but it doesn't work.

I checked the /etc/passwd file for my profile but it's not there.

Anyone know what I can do?

    Cheers!

Have you tried booting in safe mode? Hold the shift key immediately after you hear the Apple sound when you switch the machine on.

How about booting from the OS X CD and changeing the password to something you can remember ?

None of those works, I know the password alright and to be honest I think I know the username too (shouldn't it match the name of my home folder?)

I tried safe mode but it's the same deal. Is there any way to add a user to the system through the command line?

Boot up from the Mac OS X DVD that came with your MacBook Pro. To do this, hold down the "C" key while booting. The DVD needs to be in the drive, obviously.

You don't need to install the OS again, however the install disc does include a utility to reset your password(s). It also includes an application called Disk Utility, that you can use to verify and repair your hard drive.

Should you still have problems, let us know. All this information and more can be found in the manual that came with your MacBook Pro.

Well, this is getting stranger and stranger. I tried to reset the password but when I select the HD it says there are no users available on that volume.

    Any ideas?

Can I add an account using the Terminal?

    Cheers!
