I am looking to add some gear to the kit bag and wandered what generally do people have or recommend. Its nice having a selection of lenses so you can make use as the situation calls for it.

I currently only have a 20D with 70-200 & a 70mm or whatever it is that came with the camera.

    Thanks

    Mike

couldnt go wrong with the 50mm 1.8. It's a great performer for the money. Other than that, maybe something wide, a 10-20 maybe?

Sigma 10-20 is a lovely lens. Assuming you got the 24-70 with the camera, it'll cover you from 10mm - 300mm. As Rymus said, 50mm 1.8 is a great lens.

Any areas in particular that interest you? Macro, sports, portrait, landscape etc.

A bit removed from above, but a good tip I got was to keep a bin bag in your kit bag, big enough to contain your kit bag. That way if you get caught in torrential rain you can keep your stuff dry :)

    Indeed!

My essentials in my bag are: Lighter; matches; torch; pens; paper; cleaning applications; AA batteries and 3 sachets of instant coffee!

Oh and some photos, so if you're ever off the beaten track and someone asks you what the f*ck you're doing, you can show them. Works particularly well for night photography where you might be where you shouldn't be!

Just seconding the 50mm f1.8 for low light and nice bokeh :)

If you fancy macro and don't want to splash out on a macro lens, you can consider extension tubes. €100 in jessops for a set of 3.

Don't forget a polariser and a neutral density for when it's really bright and you want to be able to use a large aperture (still have to get me one of those, gah). But I don't know if you just wanted lens suggestions...

To be honest I haven't really found "my thing" yet so I am trying a bit of everything. I have to say I really liked the way the air show pics come out so maybe the sports things is the way but want to try other area first.

I am also totally intrigued at the some of the studio shots people take and would love to be there too but I need to learn so much as I am at the very early stage yet and thats the nice thing about it.

Well, sports basically means fast long lenses... the 70-200 2.8's are pretty much the beaut's of sport photography. And suitably expensive. If you got the 50mm 1.8, it'd give you a fast lens, which is great for portraits. Very cheap too, around about 100 quid. From there (50mm would be kinda the... 'standard' lens of yore) you can decide if you wanted longer or wider. Might be an idea.
