Channel 4 : Update

I am sick and tired of having to wait endlessly for updates on when C4 will become onto sky. So i decided to send both C4 and Sky letters to see what each one said about the other. Here was the response (as usual) from sky:

''Sky digital will continue its talks in relation to Channel 4 becoming abhalible onto the Republic Of Ireland Digital platform. However, many complex issues such as copyright over selected programs and Channel 4''s Licence agreements with regard to broadcasting in territorial area's must be resolved before Channel 4 could enter the Irish line up." (I didnt get a "'thank you for your enquiry" !)

Channel 4, on the other hand, Was more apologetic....

'' Im afraid channel 4 is not abhalible in the republic of Ireland via satellite. Our licene agreements currently oblige us to encrypt our satellite signal, so as only the UK Recievers can recieve it. Unless our licence arrangments change, which is highly unlikley, Channel 4 will continue to remain unabhalible. However some cable companies are premitted to supply it in Ireland, such as NTL, by what we call an ''overspill''."

"Thank you for your interset in Channel 4"

So how come e4/more4 can broadcast to ireland if they show c4 programs?
Looks like that day of c4 Freetoview is a LONG way away....:(

Maybe they want to go FTA (not FTV), like BBC, ITV and Film4 but, as part of the deal for encryption with Sky, they are bound exclusively to the Sky platform.

Check my older thread in Broadcasting as to why their licene agreements are bollox. All shows are bought with FTA satellite rights, all shows are bought with Ireland as part of their territory. Its a contract with NDS that keeps them encrypted, that is all.

and as for this "overspill nonsense" ask them why NTL pays them?

This maybe the lack of sleep talking but since when did "available" become "abhalible"???

Film4 doesnt seem to have problems with rights or with dropping NDS encryption (maybe there is a clause that when there is a relaunch, the contract only applies to the channel in its old form).

as far as I can remeber film4's encryption contracted finished earlier this year so that is why they went fta. their contract was entirely different to the channel 4 contract.

Does that mean you retyped the Channel 4 statement rather than cutting and pasting?

Chillwithcian did state that he sent letters to Sky and Ch 4 so presumably the replies were via snail-mail rather than emails, hence the need to transcribe the contents. :D
