Fully Removing/Uninstalling IE

    Hi All,

When fixing mates'/parent's computers recently, in order to minimise the risks of viruses and spyware/malware, I've removed IE from Control Panel -> Add/Remove Progs -> Add Remove Windoze Components.

There I am thinking that the dirty browser has all gone, but low and behold when doing a Start -> Windoze Update or accessing hotmail from MSN messenger, both browsers used are IE, even after a reboot !

    Anyone know why this happens?
I thought MS had to provide functionality in order to fully remove IE from Windoze as part of an Anti-Trust case against them....

Any registry keys I can delete to get rid of all traces of IE?

    Cheers

Nope, IE is pretty much an integral part of windows these days. Add/remove programs just removes the shortcuts to it.

Install an alternative browser and set it as the default.

And Windows Update will only run in IE so you shouldn't uninstall completely.

MSN Messenger will still open links in IE regardless of what your default browser is though, right?

Whoa, some quick fire reponses there !

Yep, I install FireFox (and set as default browser) before removing IE, but still Windoze updates and Hotmail via MSN open in IE.

irlrobins, what did you do to make everything open in FF?

Mmmm, didn't do anything really. Just set FF as default and when i click a link in MSN messenger it opens up in FF.

    You could try setting specfiically.

Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs->Set Program Access and Defaults. Set browser to FF and see if that helps.
