People's Photography - choosing pictures

I've been struggling to decide which pictures I should bring along with me, and I know Rymus was looking for feedback on his too - I thought it might be a good idea to centralise it a bit, and have a thread for anyone to either post their options for other people to give ideas on, or for people to get an idea of what's going to be on show and give comments - ie, yep, show that one, nope, don't show that one, show this one instead, kind of thing.

If you're a flickr user, the easiest thing is probably to have a set (here's one I made earlier) and people can either: comment on the individual pictures; comment on the set as a whole; or tag the images that they like with 'pp' - whether they are in the set or just in the photostream. So if you're on flickr make a set, post a link here, and we can pass out the judgement, muhahahaha....

For non flickr users who are commenting, easiest just to do it in the thread - and for non flickr people posting image sets, they could attach small versions, or thumbnails, and give links? Someone might have a better idea for that.

It's a bit half baked and I'm not sure if it'll work but I think we could all benefit from the feedback, anyway.

Another wee question, while I'm here - should I stick to 8x6, or is that too small? The crop factor on the 8x10 is *really* annoying me...

Hey, I have a set for it myself. I'm going bigger for the ones I know would work, up to A3, then a few A4ish, and then 6x9 space fillers. If something sells it can be replaced then.

Let me know what you think anyways...

I'm going mostly 12x8 and a few 18x12's and a 16x12. Have framed the big prints and leaving the smaller ones in their mounts. Will take a look at those two sets later on.

Elven, if the crop on a 10x8 is annoying you, why not go 12x8?

Are you lot gonna mount your shots? Like on cardboard?

Btw, Julie, thanks for the tags, did the same for you - only three not tagged, but there's a few other shots there that'd work perfect not in the set, I'll go back over in a sec, gonna flick through Ryans now!

fajitas, I just finsihed my tagging, you can see them altogether hopefully with this link: http://www.flickr.com/search/?w=42895285@N00&q=pp&m=tags

There were quite a few that I liked that you hadn't in the set...

Oh, and re: the printing/cropping - the biggest I wanted to go was A4, I'm sharing with Morlar and we figured there'd be space for 10 each at that size. I might try the 12x8 on one or two to see if they hold up to that kind of enlargement. No time to wait for Photobox now, those monkeys in the camera centre were a complete shambles so I don't know where else to try that's fairly quick for turnaround that I can get to out of hours :(

theres plenty of time for photobox left yet. I've to order a few re-prints from them and I'm not going to do that until Monday at the earliest.

I'm sending my bigger ones to Clonmel, other than that getting it done local. Get them mounted locally too as long as it ain't too expensive!

    "will cut mounts for pints"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

What's the pint to mount ratio? :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

depends on the size of the mount and the complexity. Also depends on if you supply your own board or use mine. I'll post a chart later on.

Cherry beer? Sounds good to me... ;) Actually, it probably beats sitting around, freezing, possibly being rained on, while tourists screw up their nose at your photos. Not that I'm being defeatist about it at all, that is!

So to give us a *real* reason to turn up, are we having a wee drink somewhere on the saturday evening?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,424 ✭✭✭440Hz

Bruxelles as in Brussels, Belgium.... Cherry Beer as in the nicest drink in the world, even nicer than JD go Kriek go!!

So feck the lot of ye and your dublin meet up, and your beers... ill be drinking in the home of beer so shag ye all.

There's Cherry Beer in the Porterhouse Julie, we're alright. And I think a piss-up is well in store...considering the craic had last weekend.

    Green Chatreusse Rymus?

    So who's gonna be there...?

    Myself,
    Morlar,
    Elven,
    Shrimp,
    Rymus,

I was thinking of buying some shots ,but I can't help thinking if it rains a little , the stuff will get destroyed ,do you have to bring along plastic sheeting or something clear to protect your stuff ??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

Yea Brian, was thinking of that. Hence got 500 plastic sleeves to store the prints in. Yaay, no more wet or grubby prints! Also have a large plastic cover to go over the railing in case of rain. Well prepared on this end!

Al, keep in mind that Shrimp probably won't get into any pubs :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,966 ✭✭✭elven

Did you get those sleeves from the U.S. in the end? What size are they?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

yeah yerman said 2/3 weeks delivery but they arrived in about 10 days. Well impressed. They're 11x14 inches, which suits the mounted prints I have that went into 11x14 frames. They're basically archival sleeves but will do for displaying stuff as I don't want to bring 30 11x14 framed photos to Dublin :D

    They're on the guy's website - http://www.bagsunlimited.com/cart/browse.asp?subcat=144

    Even tho I am 18... ;)

Does anyone know anywhere in Dublin which sells those sort of sleeves? or you know those envelopes that are made from cela-feen(sp?)?

    Thanks!

everywhere I've found em in Ireland, they've been outlandishly expensive... Somewhere on the order of a pack of 10 for approx €9. I got 500 for $70. Best bet is to get them off ebay.

Just bumping this. Any more interest in it? We're going for a few drinks the Sat night yeah?

Any plans for that? Like, say we finish up in Stephens Green 7ish?

Any more people gonna be about? Not even for the PP, but the few pints and bitta craic after?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,273 ✭✭✭Morlar

    Sounds good al.
