you gotta hold ctrl and press printscreen button. then open ms paint, open a blank drawing and press ctrl + v to paste the captured screen into the blank picture.

holding ctrl while pressing printscreen will only capture the active window (ie. no taskbar and desktop (if desktop is showing))

one drawback of prtscr function is file sizes are quite large, as they are basically bitmaps ... so if you have a busy screen, you can easily get a 500 Kb image

this may not be a problem if you are doing a small number of screen grabs ... but if you are doing a lot of screen grabs, you need a screen grab util ...

best one i've seen is SnagIt ... you can set up your own hot key to launch it, size the area you want to capture, and edit before pasting ... the output can be controlled, so you can pick jpg / gif or more suitable format depending on your needs

the newer versions are shareware ... i think there are older/freeware versions also on d'Internet

    more details here http://www.techsmith.com/snagit.asp

The Screenprint utility i posted above does all that and is freeware. You can set it to bmp, jpeg, gif or whatever you want. handy when you want to crop image to certain area of screen before saving.
