Try using Spybot or Ad-Aware to remove it. Some system details would be good too.

It could be........Northon is the worst virus ever put on a comp.....do a search of northon on this forum. Nobody rates it at all. Really causes problems. Its no good for finding trojans or spyware. Slows your pc down also. I'd suggest you remove it and install something better.

Further investigation reveals that it could be part of a program that runs fake security alerts and changes the backgrounds. Download the SmitFraudFix.

You're riddled with spyware crap. Run ad-aware and spybot in safe mode. Should clear it up.

And get rid of Norton, its the cause or the problem.

    Look: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/searchbt.php?search=Norton

Not so. Norton has it's problems, but I wouldn't go advising anyone to just remove it willy nilly. Could cause more problems than solutions.

And remember some versions of Norton are not capable of scanning for spyware. Spyware!=virus.

    Saw this problem before.

Right-click on the desktop, select properties. Go into Desktop tab and select customize desktop.

Then select the web tab and de-select everything.

    Now re-run scans/spyware/virus etc.

That background in itself is spyware, prompting you to go to more sites riddled with spyware.

    Get these....

    Spybot 1.4
    Ad-aware
    Hijack this
    AVG Anti-Virus
    Zone-Alarm Firewall

    Phew, happy downloading/cleaning.

When your done, get rid of that Norton rubbish.

Lol, so true. I love the ones that tell you to buy this program to remove the so-called spyware. I know a guy who did, he couldn't comprehend the fact that he was flat out lied to.

looks like you have both norton and avg running - two av's is not a good idea at the same time usually - uninstall one of them - however you also have other problems

yes the background itself is not to be believed because it is malware itself

    try something like this
    http://www.google.ie/search?hl=en&q=1752+spyware&btnG=Search&meta=

Why is running these programs in safe mode better?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 36,634 ✭✭✭✭Ruu_Old

Safe mode uses the minimum amount of drivers and loads only necessary programs so the chances of the virus or anti spyware running is very slim.

Would 1 av prog not see the other prog as a problem. Didn't think it was possible to have 2 av progs without major conflicts.

yes there probably ARE conflicts going on - both programs are running - see the system tray in the screenshot

Hi, i put on avg last saturday when i was called about the problem regarding the viruses and spyware. I swear by it.

i cant really take off norton as the guy has paid a subsciption til Jan 07 and its not my decision to make.

    thanks all for your replies

EDIT: I have spyware blaster is that any good at removing spyware already on it or just detecting stuff before it hits your system??

Spyware Blaster will prevent some types of spyware but theres no harm in having more that one. Are you still getting the message on the desktop? Did you run the SmitFraud link I posted?

its another mans computer so im just trying to find which spyware (freeware) prog is good. i downloaded that thing though. how'd i run it if i give it to the man???

Ok so you just want some anti-spyware links? Well make sure the system is updated to Windows XP Service Pack 2 (if running XP). The links that Smellyirishman provided should be enough. If you want to run Smitfraud which I think is the root of the problem, click here for detailed instructions.

And get rid of 1 of the av progs. Let him decide which 1.

Download hijackthis, run a log, and post it up here, would probably be your best bet

believe me you simply CANT have 2 av programs - if you cant remove norton then you'll have to remove AVG - the pc will be a disaster with both on it ..... (you can run as many antispywares as you like though usually)
