Hi, Does anyone know the African Charity with the lowest administation percentage....I am planning to donate a sizeable sum and don't want it eaten up by wages of workers in Ireland?
    Thanks

    I'm not sure that's the best metric really;
Just because a charity has lower admin costs than another doesn't mean they're spending the remainder of the money any more wisely...
hell, it could probably be argued that higher admin costs result in the rest of the money being spent better.

That said, any charity that uses face2face or other chugger scum can just f*** off if they think i'm giving them cash :)

Why don't you give it to cancer research.

One third of everybody you know, will die from cancer.... with 1 : 3 chance of yourself too.

I worked for Oxfam Ireland for a number of years and we had a strict 100% of direct donations goes to the cause it's donated to. You can donate your money as a general donation, which means that the money can go into any aid work it is needed for or you could choose from which ever special appeals are being held at the time, eg East Africa. However you can't say "I want this money to go to Zambia" for example, if we don't have an appeal for Zambia at that time. If you call 01 672 7662, someone can discuss it fully with you.

They can also fill you in on Tax Effective Giving, which means that any donation over €300 in one year can actual mean €360/€420 for the charity depending on which tax bracket you are in.

Afaik, Oxfam Ireland is one of the only aid organisations which has a 100% donation to aid policy. Many others are around 80-70%, in fact even Oxfam GB only gives 84% of a donation to aid work. Oxfam Ireland is amazingly cost effective as it has a policy stating that more than 90% of all money earned, (through shops, corporate and government grants etc) must go to aid. So all staff, property and campaigning budgets come from less than 10% of income, while 100% of direct donations go to aid.

Concern is the worst. They have glossy brochures and ads all the time.
Sure, they get the message across but the cost of all these letters in the post and tv ads is huge. Theres no need for it all. Just plain paper, and some ads.

Médecins Sans Frontières are my favourite charity. Aside from all the amazing work they do they don't use bloody chuggers.

I like UNICEF. My Direct Debit is with these guys, simply, because kids are important. I don't want kids, ever, but I do like them, and it's not fair for kids to grow up in crappy environments. 80% of what UNICEF gets to the areas needed, the other 20% is used up in shipping costs, admin, etc. There's a reason people like Ewan McGregor, Peter Ustinov and Roger Moore suport it!

Indeed, give it to some childrens hospital in Ireland. They are always in desperate need of funds.

While not knocking donations to africa, I agree with some of the other posters re: home charities. Plenty of deserving causes here...rape crisis, our lady's, cancer research, SDVP etc.

I can also vouch for the other poster who recommended Oxfam Ireland - you can ask for all your donation to go to projects if you wish. I wrote the history of the organisation earlier this year.

Ruu - It is true that childrens hospitals in Ireland always need funds, but as an example, the government have recently allocated half a billion euros for a new childrens hospital in Dublin, the location of which is still being decided.

If the OP is interested - although I know you did specifically mention Africa, and to offer another option - I am currently working with an experienced partner charity to secure funds and medical aid for two childrens hospitals in the Iraqi city of Basra. Overheads are being funded through other (fairly insubstantial) earnings of mine.

I can ensure that your donation buys essential medical aid and being a very small organisation, I will see to it that you get a detailed receipt for the medicine/medical supplies that are bought with your donation.

Please pm me if you would like to know more.

Would be interested to know what you decide.

    http://www.glimmerofhope.org/

Glimmer of hope is the charity your thinking of Id say. Founded by an Irish guy and doing great work.

"A unique aspect of A Glimmer of Hope’s approach is 100 percent of donor funds are directed to its project partners and the communities in need. This is made possible by the income arising from the foundation’s endowment being used to cover all operating overheads."

I'd go with http://www.doctorswithoutborders.com/ as mentioned above. Recently gave them a donation. Unicef would be my second choice but I would avoid donating via the goons on the street.

Just wondering why it has to be an african charity ?? There are many worthy ones right here on your doorstep that get over looked. the Lauralynn hospic fund is just one example www.lauralynnhospice.com They are trying to open a hospic for children who are dying
