Any time I try to copy a file(600MB AVI) into a folder on the same disk I get the error:
"Cannot move FILENAME:It is being used by another person or program. Close any program that might be using the file and try again. "

I only have firefox and windows explorer open..
It is an external USB HD, 400GB.
    Any suggestions?

Boot into safe-mode and copy the file...

    Try in safe mode.

Did you download it using a p2p filesharing application or are you running something like media centre that could be using the file for indexing etc...

Though this is extremely unlikely in safe-mode...

You could do something silly like set up an ftp server on your pc and then download it to your external drive :o) ... otherwise try and find the process that is controlling it and kill it...

Have you had a look in msconfig?

Not running Media Centre, Indexing is turned off. Using WinXP Pro.
Didn't see anything out of the ordinary in msconfig.
Why should I have to boot into safe mode to copy a file? Or are ye just suggesting this might root out the cause of it?

edit; didn't download it with p2p/torrent etc. It was copied from a cd

You've been given ideas, you haven't tried them. Doesn't inspire adding any more.
But on the offchance: COPY the file, not MOVE, then Task-Manager / close Explorer / File - New Task / run CMD, navigate to your original file and delete it. Then File - New Task - Explorer.

You're not copying the file, you're moving it. First, click the file and wait for the details to appear in the status bar (it'll be info about resolution, codec, size, etc). Explorer is reading this information from the file and you can't move it until it's finished. After the information appears you can move the file.
