Got a full 360 during the week from Xtravision. System hangs at startup about 1/3rd of the time and, when playing COD2, hangs after about 1/2 hour-1 hour or so (Haven't had a chance to give it a REAL long test yet). Also will not read my Oblivion disc even though I got a replacement disc. Not getting any error lights yet but was wondering if this was the start of a collapse of the system. Have left the system on while I went to work to stress it a bit. Was going to give my Oblivion disc to a mate to see if it'll play on his system but won't be in till tomorow. Well folks, your verdict/experience would be appreciated. Thanks folks.

Bring it back to xtra vision while your still in the 28day window, if you get the red lights on day 29, you'll have to send it back to MS and wait over a week for return/replacement. It's not long before it will start getting worse.

agree with grumpy , bring it straight back to xtravision and get a new one.

Thanks folks, will do that tomorrow alright. Haven't gotten the red lights yet but, like you said, I believe it's only a matter of time. Was just confirming with ye...... For the people who are thinking about a 360 though: apart from this I still think it's a cool auld machine. Like it and I'm a bit biased towards Nintendo, resisted the purchase until I came into some extra cash.

Will let ye know how I get on. Thanks for the quick reply

    While on this topic...
How long is the warranty on the 360 in this country? I know in the US they only get 3 months and those who bought one at launch date got six months because of the high number of defects. I was listening to a podcast yesterday (this one http://wickedpissa.libsyn.com/index.php?post_id=117903) and the bloke on it had got his on launch date, and had bought every game and accessory for the bloody thing (totatling about $2000) and they charged him $100 to get it fixed because it was out of the 6 month warranty. Then tried to offer him an extended warranty for 50 quid. Cheeky bastards.

The warranty is 1 year in Europe.

A hanging xbox360 was the begining of the slippery slope of decline for my xbox, a week later it was 3 red lights.

Mine hangs occasionally whilst using the Marketplace and its the 3rd machine I'm on.

    Is this an issue ?

You have had three and you dont think it's an issue? Does it lock up, or does it just hang for a few seconds?

The latest one is doing this. It hangs for about a minute or so, the odd time I've had to force the power off.

Not a good sign. It's not supposed to do that, so why wouldn't you think its a problem? My 360 is perfect, never once hung, froze, or crapped out for no reason. And when/if (which it eventually will) start to frag, The first sign of hanging and it's on it's way back to microsoft. I dont pay €410, for something that doesn't function correctly.

Question: Do you put each xbox in the same position as the last?

Yeah you never seem to hear of people with one xbox breakin, there always on the third or forth?! They must be doing something wrong!!

The xbox that just broke i had a big table just for it. But the lad on the phone said that ill be getting a different powerpack because he thinks the xbox isnt getting enough power so hopefully that will solve the problem.

Yeah I know, being on your forth is either extreme unluckness, or extreme retardism :p

My xbox however is perfect :D

Standing vertical, a few inches shy of a crt monitor. No problems yet.

Well, got me new 360. still not playing Oblivion. (Got as far as creating my character once but now just keeps saying disc is dirty. It's not but there is a tiny blemish. May try it on my mate's system) but at least it's not hanging anymore........ so far. Thanks for the input folks

That makes sense, if the power pack is fecked then no matter how many 360s they send most of em will break.

Hope it works out for you mate nothing worse than wanting a console to be great and it breaking on you

Looks like I'm going to be on my 2nd Xbox now, does anyone get an issue when they boot it up the surround sound does not work properly? Works on DVD's and some games, but in marketplace surround does not work and and COD, Tiger Woods it does not work...very strange....

Mine is hanging now again, get the three red lights but i remove the HD all cables and works for a while then goes...but no matter what I do the surround sound does not work....

I wish they would just give you a new one instead of a refurbished one...is there any chance that you can demand a new one by law?

I'm on my 3rd one now and this evening it hung again whilst playing TGU, I had to actually get up from the sofa and switch it off. It wasn't the hanging that bothered me , it was the getting up.

I'm going to call that shower of c$nts tomorrow and ask for a new one this time

Get the manager on the phone ktric its the only way u will get a new 360 so ya dont have to get ur old 1 repaired again and then in a month later breaks down again.

Im having a similar problem with mine now. but its happening when playing Need for Speed Most wanted. It happened 3 times in the space of a half hour.

while im playing the music will start to lower its volume then stop then seconds later the whole machine will freeze up. i have to hit the power button to turn it off. Is anybody else having a problem like this with this game? Or should i be making a call for my 4th xbox :P

PDF of the console warranty from xbox.com

    http://www.xbox.com/NR/rdonlyres/4CAD85E2-E917-41FE-BD66-0D77F2DEEEB2/0/emeaconsolewarrantyEnFrEsDeItPtDuEl.pdf

If anything goes pear shaped (ring of death / hanging for extended periods of time / faulty playback of fmv) in the first 28 days you should demand a replacement / refund from the retail shop you bought it in. Your entitled to that whether they like itr or not.
