I always went every year for about ten years, class watching the saloon car racing and the 'historic' classics racing !

Always good action from the other groups too, including the Porsches, and its all FREE !!

Check out www.phoenixparkmotorraces.org for the timetable, and NO you dont need tickets !

I'll be there all weekend, commentating, except for Saturday and Sunday after the racing, when you'll find me propping up the bar in The Hole In The Wall just down the road..........
The Historic Race should be fantastic, I hear they are over subscribed and there are some GT3 Porsches travelling from the Uk to take on the quickest Irish ones.....
And as MercMad says, it's free in!!!
Sure what else would you be doing!!!:)

Jesus, my Bro (Beekay) will go mad, he just bought a mint 95 cooper from UK, now he has to learn to drive on the roads... be sure to check us out, F5 (no.9) and F Vee (nos 21, 22)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,280 ✭✭✭commited

Yup - I've seen the car on MiniResource. Make sure you come over to say hi - I think my car'll be on the stand, depending on how clean it is :)

Just posted a new thread seeing if anyone fancied the spin this weekend, I think I'd better ammend it 'cos I'd prefer to go to the races on the bike. I'll pop up to see you MM, I look forward to that! Is H racing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 202 ✭✭Motormouth

Nope, H isn't racing, I did too much damage to her car the last day, and she's working anyway!! She'll be around on Sunday though.
I went through the Park at lunchtime, it's all taking shape nicely!!

I'll be heading over, a friend offered VIP tickets with parking and food, I couldn't resist.

I went on Saturday, brilliant. That Lotus Elan is a real bullet!!! And thanks to the MG Midget BB2 "31 for the great show. I as somewhat pleased to see the Porsches taking a beating :)

I "just have to" shoehorn a V8 in my MGB and join in next year... :)

    Fantastic fun.

Just back, I really enjoyed the classic race, great seeing cars I hadn't seen in years, an avenger being one, giving it welly. Seemed very competitive. Put a goo on me to buy an old mustang and join in.

He would have gone over to say hi only for i had him fixing my F5 for most of the weekend. But at least I made it up to him by winning on sunday. made all our hard work worth it in the end. :):D

Which class were you kersh? Seemed to be so many different types of open wheel racing. Were you the winner with formula shane written on the side
    Nice pics btw 127.

That Tiger is always awesome. Unless Jackie went off (unlikely) or had a mechanical failure (also unlikely) he was always going to win both Historic races.

..............saw the car there ! Looks great in the flesh !
Just back, great crack altogether. The Sunbeam Tiger was the tits, and finally seeing an F1 car in the flesh was a revelation. Aside from that, the best car I saw was in the parking lot, an absolutely immaculate 2.8 one of these; with a baby seat in the back. Not a scratch or a ding to be seen.

    .............that was mine ! !

Thanks very much, brought the wife and kids up for a bit of a sniff of the Castrol R !!

Hey Kersh, were you driving No.9 in the race on Sunday ? Seemed off a cylinder or two !!

    N0.9 in F5. The Leyton House lookalike :D .

Yep that was me, wouldn have won without all the cylinders :D , that said was taking it easy on the brakes, didnt want a repeat of saturdays chicane remodelling

I hear that the eBay Mini did not sell: did not get bids above the reserve... But it is great that eBay sponsored the races.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 202 ✭✭Motormouth

Yeah, it was an appropriate sponsor, considering the amount of classics bought on Ebay and imported here!! The guys from Ebay came into the commentary box to chat to us and were very enthusiastic..........

So anyone got any ideas for a car that might beat the Tiger??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 446 ✭✭Eric318

Yes, how can we beat the Tiger?? :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 202 ✭✭Motormouth

Doyle's Elan has come close at mondello a few times, and that is only 1600cc but i don't think he's ever managed to beat it yet. i remember a Lotus 11 running it close years ago, but that was a far tamer Tiger than the current one!! Maybe a HUGE monsoon shower and a really well sorted Cooper S??

Where are the Historics competing next ??

Sept 9/10 - Mondello Park on International Circuit - Leinster Trophy Races.

Sept 15/16 - MEC Sprint event, Ashford Co Wicklow. On the old road from Cullenmore Hotel through the 5 Cullenmore bends & a straight squirt to finish - 0.8 mile. Superb surface, very fast & a couple of scary bends. The top guns will be hitting 140mph+ over the line.

Sept 23 - Kirkistown race meeting, Ards Peninsula.

Mondello on sat/sun this week, part of the Leinster Trophy weekend

I wonder could we get a classics car park area sectioned off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 610 ✭✭✭green-blood

oh absolutely I meant in the public car park... ya know just one square for classics... might encourage people to come in their classic

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,892 ✭✭✭Kersh

Sure just get 2 of yous to park 'economically', then slot the rest in around yous.. :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 446 ✭✭Eric318

    Where is Mondello Park??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 202 ✭✭Motormouth

from Dublin, head south on the N7 for Cork/Limerick. Take the 2nd Naas exit (Signposted Mondello) and turn right at the top of the ramp, straight through small roundabout, crossroads turn right, crossroads turn left, strsight through Caragh village and its about 2 miles further on the left.

Good man, come over and say hi!! I'll try to hang onto that Ebay Mini in the race for the laugh!! ;)
I believe most of the Minis racing in historics have about 130bhp?!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,280 ✭✭✭commited

Yup - the ebay Mini is no slouch.

What are the specs on the 127?

1301cc, lightened, balanced. Supposedly, 110bhp and 670kgs. I'd say 100bhp is nearer the mark. The car is with Steve Griffin at the moment, hoping to get a rolling road run before the race but we'll see what happens........
    looking forward to it anyway..................

You can cheer for both! Cheer for the leaders and the main pack and then wait till I go by and cheer again for me!!! :D

    Fantastic engine spec there :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 202 ✭✭Motormouth

It's actually an old Fiat Challenge car from the UK so the specs are similar to the Irish Fiats, in that you can blueprint the engine but in the Uk you can also modify and flow the head, hence the extra power. It runs a single twin choke weber and K&N and standard 'box. has a transverse leaf spring which has been stiffened so it's a little bit "taily" but thats beats understeer any day!!I brought it to a track day at Kirko when I first got it, about 6 months ago but it had a huge flat spot and the suspension wasn't set up at all, so it was a bit of a handful, seemed quite quick in a straight line though..............although racing cars always do when they are alone on track!!!!!
I think I'd better pray for rain on Saturday!!!!

    Motormouth,
Rustlings in the grass indicate a Super Porsche is on the drawing board for next year and there is talk of a Cobra and further exotica (McLaren M6GT) being prepared.
2007 could be a bumper year as there also appears to be multiplying of the Mini ranks.

    I cant wait already!!!!
    See you Saturday.

Great news. I had heard about the McLaren all right. When I dropped the 127 to Steve Griffin's the other day, he had Liam Plower's old Midget in the garage, and he says he might come out to play in that too..... Quick machine, that, with huge history. Also, I heard that Crossle are prepping a 9S for a current HRCA racer, and Punto Abarth driver Matt Dunne is looking at Nino Forte's Midget. Also, Tommy Doherty has a quick Capri that he has been threatening to bring out for a while now.Lot of reasonably cheap racing Minis on Ebay lately too. Not the dearest class in the world to get into.......

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 610 ✭✭✭green-blood

tell me more about this M6Gt and I'll have root through my books for any history.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 202 ✭✭Motormouth

I don't actually know anything about it other than the fact that its in the country. I think it's Dominic Peel who has it, he usually races the red Davrian.............
