    Hi all,

Do any of ye know where I can get a few old Rover V8 engines? They don't need to be running, and I don't need ancillaries just the engine, crank and pistons etc...

    Cheers

Most of them have been dumped or used up at this stage here, you'd be better off trying in England or you could try an ad in the Irish classic car magazine or the Buy and Sell.

Yes, there are loads in the UK, shipping them over is the problem.
I'm hoping someone on here may know of one somewhere closer to home.
What I really would like to find is one that I can get running again. So a complete one would be a better option...

    Hi Cmar,

We are involved in Land Rover stuff - and there are plenty of people getting rid of their V8's in favour of diesels - majoritively Jap diesels (not something I condone) - you definitely don't have to go to the uk - between the south and the north there are plenty of them.

Post a wanted on our forum: http://www.clri.net/smf/index.php

Also the NI LR club: http://www.landrover-club.com/

I have a dismantled V8 in the shed - but it's destined for a rebuild - but if you need any bits and bobs when you do get your engine - please let me know as we have sheds of parts which need clearing.

Check out our hobby site if you get a chance: http://www.tomaxcars.com

    Cheers,

    Andrew

    Hi Andrew,

I'll check out the sites this evening. Thanks for the links!!!
What could I expect to pay for an engine. I am not well up on these so If you have any tips or typical prices, it would be great

    Cheers

    Hi Ciaran,

I was on the same hunt last year. I'm not sure what your application is but for simplicity I'd imagine that you are intending to use carbs.

You can pick up a v8 from 150-350 EUR - very little of this depends on condition - more who is selling it. Preferably you'd get one from a motor that is being broken so that you can establish the mileage.

The Rover V8 should have it's timing chain replaced at 80k miles - and would hopefully have had a filter & oil change every 6k miles - however this highly unlikely.

The v8 will soldier on with infrequent oil changes etc. and many do - so if you are looking at one take off the oil filler cap and have a good poke about round the rockers - a lot of sludge will build up here - if possible remove the rocker cover and have a good look - to be honest they are so cheap to get hold of - if there is a lot of sludge just walk away - because whilst everything is available for a rebuild it's a lot of hassle.

Also look out for emulsion etc. on the cap as with any engine.

If you are intending to tweek the engine - cam, heads etc. then try to get a post 1982 block as it has additional strengthening ribs and is apparently a more stable block for tuning.

    Cheers,

    Andrew.
