i have a 20 gb ide hard drive, a seagate barracuda ata IV 20GB st320011a to be precise.

when i plugged it into my win xp pro computer its showing up as 7.86 GB.

its set up as a slave and the capacity isn't being limited. i have large hdd support set up, my other 120GB shows up fine.

has this ever happened to anyone? any idea what's wrong?

Right click My Computer, click Manage. Goto to Storage>Disk Management. Down the bottom there may be "Unallocated Space" in your new drive. If not, I'm lost.

Ive had one like this before. It was originally formatted under NT (i think) which limeted the size of the drive. if the XP disc management thing doesnt work, you may have to delete the master boot record (I used delpart) and reformat.

check the jumper settings aswell, some drives have a limit capacity jumper setting

If your bios allows it try playing with the cylinder etc settings on the disk until you get one that gives you a similar amound of space to the capacity of the disk.

Then boot into windows and see if its usable.

A lot of drives will happily work with random heads/cylinders/tracks settings as long as they are approximatly right.

i'm very confused now. its showing up as 20 GB in the bios and i'm able to create a 20GB FAT32 partition using fdisk, but it shows up as 7.86 GB in xp. how do i use delpart to edit the master boot record? i can't find any option for it

@squirrel, the cylinders etc are all grey, i can't edit them

Its probably not worth trying if the bios and DOS tools can see the full 20Gb.

Sounds like an XP bug of some kind to me.
