im just wondering how long could i keep my computer on for without any damage or anything like over heating happening to it..i do be afriad to leave on through the night just in case something happened to it during the night..ive just a normal pc..no extra fans or stuff like that..so how long could it go for before it would have to be switched off to cool down or whatever would ya say??

and would my router be ok as well if that was left on for the same amount of time as the computer could be as it gets very hot after a while??

As long as you can keep paying your power bill. :) Any particular reason you are needing to have it on or just wondering? I guess as long as there is nothing strenuous going on when its left on then it should be fine most of the time. Mine is on most of the time and I notice no problems with everything seeming to be cool and functioning properly.

yeh i do this every so often after about 3 days or so windows needs a reboot as it kind of starts to slow down but other than that it's fine. ohh and my router is never plugged out.

Simple answer is as long as windows stays stable for.

As long as your pc is in a decently ventilated room, its effectively until the first component breaks.

Switch a piece of electrical equipment on and off is far more stressful for it than leaving it switched on.

Unless you are paranoid at somebody hijacking your router I would leave it on as long as your computer is on.

A lot of people would leave their routers on permanently. Myself included.

Mine has been on for almost 9 months with only an occasional reboot.

most office PC's are never turned off. I always turn my office PC at the weekends but most folks just leave theirs locked. My own PC is only on in the evenings mostly but I have left it running overnight plenty of times. Occasionally I have left it running numerical fluid mechanics simulations (constant 100% CPU usage) for loooong periods of time, and I've a boring ordinary Dell.

My mac I put to sleep every day but never shutdown. The linux server has an uptime of 200days. I guess the biggest factor will be Windows for you. Memory leaks crashes etc....

My cable modem is never off and the cable company tell me never to turn it off.

    essentially yes.

Routers tend to run quite hot because most of them are like mini-pc's themselves. They usually have quite a decent processor in, but are passively cooled, hence the case getting hot.

Both my Dlink Router and Modem get quite hot to the touch. The modem is 4 years old and still going strong. Never been off except for powercuts and the odd hard reset.

Give them a bit of space around them for extra cooling if you want. Although mine is wedged like a book between CD/DVD cases.:D

I run my laptop for weeks on end just putting it to standby when I want to move it, so it doesn't overheat in the case and so the HD doesnt get an accidental knock. Standby gives a very quick "reboot", a few seconds. I also have to reboot properly occasionally to speed it up!

Often run Desktop PCs for weeks on end too especially if not paying for the ESB! No problems that I have found so far anyway.
