    Writing this for my mother

Does anybody know of anyone who works as a school secretary/caretaker and who is made redundant each summer and then re-employed in September. The reason she asks is because every year she is made to wait about 1-2 months for her dole money (6 weeks and counting this year) and she feels that she is discriminated against simply because she is employed by the Dept of Education. (My friend waited less than a week to get his letter from the welfare)
Also the situation where she is made redundant during the summer and re-employed each school year is ridiculous.
Basically she is looking to get in contact with a few other school secretarys/caretakers who have the same grievances, with a mind to possibly taking the matter further.

Even if the schools wanted to keep the staff on all year round (which probably wouldn't suit them for financial reasons) they would run into difficulty with the fixed term workers act as there are limits on the renewal of fixed term contracts.

Dont think she can do anything as its up to her to furnish the information needed to make a claim. If its an unemployment benefit claim it shouldnt take too long to process as its not means tested. Confirmation is needed from each employer of accrued holidays etc received and the duration of the lay off so as the staff can determine the days of unemployment and hence for payment to issue to a customer.

TBH is a Dept of Educ problem and its unfortunate because the summer is the busiest time of the year. From the few claims I did deal with last year some were fairly quick, and others were still outstanding when I left due to other issues like means tests / p45's. If the Dept of Educ were smart about it they would do some sort of deal with the Dept of Social, instead of creating extra work for both sides.

I worked in the Dole officer for a while, her best bet is to claim for DB-(Disability Benefit). She can go to her local GP and say she is depressed etc etc and get them to fill out a MC1 form.

You can hand this into the Dole office or to your Local CWO (Community Welfare Officer) - (Check you local Health Board)

She will then have to present a MC2 Cert every week to the CWO or Dole Office...This cert has to be filled out by the doctor - there is no charge for this cert.

    Hope that helps a bit
