Creationist museum almost finished (with robotic dinosaurs)

This featured in an rte programme on sunday called 'Story of God'.

The museums curators Mr. Ken Ham reckons wait for it

"Dinosaurs roamed the earth with people" he goes on "the bible just doesn't mention them as with many other species" he finishes with "noah did bring them on the ark, the small ones and maybe a few fossils".

Very tempted to throw in a bill hicks bt at this stage,...ah what the hell

The idea that God.. might be.. ****in' with our heads? I have trouble sleeping with that knowledge. Some prankster God running around: "Hu hu ho. We will see who believes in me now, ha ha." [mimes God burying fossils] "I am God, I am a prankster." "I am killing Me."

Meanwhile in switzerland scientists are building a multi million euro construction due to be finished in the year 2009 which will (attempt) recreate what happened just nano seconds after big bang

The american spend on religious industries is estimated to be somewhere between around sixty and ninety billion dollars per year. Unlike regular businesses and taxpayers, institutions of religion in the US are tax-free and I believe that none are required to file any kind of financial reports, so the exact annual spend is impossible to pin down.

For comparison, NASA receiveds around fifteen billion dollars per year and CERN, around 900 million dollars, so your comment is not inaccurate for small values of a 'gazillion' :)

At least it'll mean the US Christians have less money to spend on automatic riffles to go hunting ducks or protecting there little houses from strangers and tornadoes.

It's funny that their museum is in direct competition with science yet none of the fancy gizmo's in the museum would work if science was a load of baloney.

Was talking about independant funding i.e non govermental non offical
Of course science would recieve enormous offical funding every year, that wasn't my point. My point was that in the US fundamentalist funding from regualr people, apparently casual funding, like say at huge meeting where a preacher is employed, is a huge business although it is still seen as independant and therefore non regulated funding for the church.
Science has nothing like this to raise funds, which is a great shame.

Robindch your posts seem to invariably lead to disagreement, have you noticed that?

    > Was talking about independant funding i.e non govermental non offical

Sorry -- I was referring to net intake only, and not where it was coming from. Though it could be said that at a nominal 33% tax rate, that the government is implicitly funding religion at somewhere between 20B$ and 30B$ per year.

    > Science has nothing like this to raise funds, which is a great shame.

In the sense that there are no mass gatherings, yes, I agree, but would people donate the sums needed if there were? I doubt it: it's difficult enough to get people to attend any scientific meeting at all, without the added disincentive that they might be patted down on the way out!

Some are non-governmental outfits do invest in research (ie, the Wellcome Trust, at around $600m per year), but I'd imagine that the total amounts from these are much smaller than the grants from the world's governments.

    > Robindch your posts seem to invariably lead to disagreement

Um, I was agreeing with you! :)

Hands up who wants to visit the:
    Bible Authority Room
The Bible is true. No doubt about it! Paul explains God’s authoritative Word, and everyone who rejects His history—including six-day creation and Noah’s Flood—is ‘willfully’ ignorant.
Looks like a great day out!

    The Bible is true

    lol
What's their thoughts on the fact it was written 300 years later, or is that a lie?

June 14, 2000 — The first spectacular images of atoms smashing together at near-light speed were released Wednesday as part of an experiment scientists say will eventually generate a state of matter that existed a millionth of a second after the Big Bang. A milestone in physics, the researchers’ effort has also generated heated debate and several doomsday theories — including one that argues the experiment might release particles called “strangelets,” which could gobble the earth

please don't gobble the earth though

It's sorta funny in that my sister bought a book the other day on Irish Fables and Myths. In reading it to her, it occured to me how nobody believes that Irish myths like "The Children Of Lir" to be true and yet dozens of brainless Creationists actually believe such crap from the Bible. Sure, the Earth was created in six days and the Earth is only 5,000 years old? As if!!! They only believe Genesis story to be true because it's in the bible. If it wasn't, they'd probably be the first ones to deny it as false.

Then again, George Bush and his right-wing conservatives are Creationists anyway.

It's like life immitating art. The site reads like the Onion's Intelligent Falling parody, only its for real.

I cannot belief that people are able to subscribe to this view of life without making a conscious decision to be irrational.

Wouldn't it be funny if the whole Answers in Genesis thing was a big hoax. A sort of FSM only instead of parodying creationism it pretended to be creationism. They would make up all their ridiculous arguements and let everyone swallow them all while collecting millions in donations. Then when they finally open their great museum (well theme park really) that contains all the evidence for creationism its just a big empty shed.

that would be nice... mmm whats that... BANG!... ouch, oh its the real world

A nice idea, but unlikely given how much money our dear (honorary) Dr Ham is making out of it!

In my more cynical moments, I have, like most people I suspect, thought about setting up as an astrologist or cosmic healer or homeopathist or creationist myself. All you need is a flexible set of morals, a sense of opportunity and no discenable talent other than an ability to approach things with an open mouth...

what do monkeys have to with athiestism

    googles athiest musuem
"Breakfast local-style at the hotel, with champagne, caviar, and freshly made pancakes, and then head west up Nevsky, crossing the Kanal Griboedova, with its excellent view of the "Savior on the Blood" Church and the impressive Kazan Cathedral, converted under the communists into an atheist museum. Petersburg is built on more than 40 islands, leading to its reputation as the "Venice of the North." As you head further up Nevsky you'll cross yet another waterway, the Moika River. "
    http://www.skepticfiles.org/american/whyneed.htm
    13. Separating, in the public view, the notion of any
relation between the political position of communism and
the life-style of Atheism. This was accomplished by
popularizing the term "American Atheist." Atheists no
longer need to live under the dreadful stigma of the
McCarthy era of our nation, when every Atheist was branded
with the political label of communism.

there is american athiest museum in petersburg indiana but I can't find anything else on it.

here is a museum to non-christiam persecution http://www.michiganatheists.org/events/caro/caro.html
but it seems a little antagonistic/victimish but maybe that is useful.

Because we're open minded and have little vested interest in our beliefs. Aside from that, we've derived our beliefs from rationality rather than emotion and hence we lack a knee-jerk reaction to opposing views.

That and the fact that some of us have a secret hope for the endless potential of humanity. :o  ;)
