Hey all... I'm slowly building up the courage to buy a slr... Most likely going to be the D50 (was going to be the D70s but thats gone now and the D80 is a bit too pricey).

I want to buy it online for the price difference... But is it worth it, to pay about €150-200 extra in a shop?? Like in conns where you get free cdd cleaning etc???

The D50 is a good camera. I'd wait and see how much the D80 will be though, although I doubt anyone will have their hands on one for a few months unless you order it the instant it comes out.

Try Gunnes. Talk to them and see what they can do for you.

Was talking to the guy in conns today and he said it's being replaced by the D80... He also said that the D80 will cost about €1500... But I don't know if that was a guess or not...

1500 for the D80 would be crazy with the superior D200 just a hundred or two more. Conns guys are grand and all, but sometimes they're a bit too salesperson-y.

well he was saying that it has 10.1 MP's and how brilliant it is... but that won't change the fact that i can't afford it lol... although i think it's silly that they're not producing the D70s anymore, they're still doing the D50 though!

id imagine the D80 will be available for less than $1000 online, or certainly around that figure.

I guess we'll all find out in around 12 hours time!

AFAIK Conns info is wrong or at best premature. Nikon D70s should be offered along side D80 for a while anyway.

D50 doesn't have an aperature preview/dof button, which rules it out in my book.
D70s with kit lens 18-70 seems about the lowest reasonable quality new entry system.
www.pixmania.com and www.ajpurdy.co.uk have it listed anyway.

Would be very interested to know what Gunn are charging for same, also Canon 350D. Wouldn't mind paying a (small!) premium as their service is so good.

As a matter of interested are you considering Canon?

I was... but not now... I don't like the feel and the ccd is very small, so even with their 8mp's... the image quality is still the same as the nikon d50 at 6.1mp's... and for some reason im just more drawn to the nikon lol... but i was considering the pentax k100d... but thats mostly because i have an af pentax lens for my film camera lol...

do you think i should consider it??

dont forget the Samsung GX-1s is also a possibility, it accepts a lot of pentax lenses.

Up to yourself! Just curious to why not. I would consider either a Nikon D70 with 18-70 kit lens or a Canon 350D with a Tamron SP AF 28-75mm Di f2.8.
    Both around the same price.

Don't think their is a huge difference in sensor size (1.5 vs 1.6 multiplier so can't be much). From review image quality similar, with maybe less noise at higher ISO with Canon. But either look good to me. D50 has a great price, but lack of aperature preview bothers me.

-200 or -300mm zooms from Nikon all seem to be very expensive, compared to Canon. I am sure you can get a good Sigma or Tamron though.
