as an ebay virgin soon to loose his virginity I am just wondering. if you were sold something that wasn't working or defective in some way, is there anything you could do?

The watchword with eBay is know (or try to know) who it is you're buying off....look to see if it's an "All Sales are final" or maybe a DOA guarantee or in some cases 30 day (or maybe more) warranty.

In the cases where stuff is new it'll usually be covered by a manfacturer's warranty (check with seller)
Most good selllers won't risk their reputation by selling faulty goods and in the case where something arrives and doesn't wrok, a =genuine seller will do what needs to be done to keep the buyer happy....it all goes back to knowing your seller.

What Wertz said, also since you an eBay newbie research the seller, their feedback, previous items they sold and their time registered. If in doubt, throw up a link and someone of us can have a l00k at it for you if you wish.

they have a dispute resolution process which costs 50 bucks a pop so it depends on the value of the item if u want to use it. As the others say, research the seller in detail and if this is their first item, beware.
Also look at how they want to be paid eg Paypal, it gives them some legitimacy.
Whatever you do dont deal outside ebay once you make the decsion to purchase. many sellers try that. If u do u are completely exposed.
    Have fun!!

Make sure you pay for it with PayPal and buy something that has "PayPal Buyer Protection" this means that you will be entitled up to a 500euro refund directly from PayPal if anything goes wrong. If what you buy doesnt show up then you can take your claim to PayPal site and fill in some information. If you buy something that doesnt work, PayPal might ask you to get a second opinion quote from a repair shop they can contact. They will ask you, at your own expense to send it back to the seller for your refund. Oh and ircoha is wrong up there, it doesnt cost anything to file a claim with them.

Western Union as payment method is a MAJOR no-no. :)

(sorry for the ultimate n00bness of this question) what is paypal?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 36,634 ✭✭✭✭Ruu_Old

Paypal is an eBay company allows people to send money and make payments for items via the internet. Just an electronic method as opposed to paper cheques really. Its pretty safe (if you don't fall for the scam emails going around) and they offer different types of accounts, Personal, Premier, Business afaik.
You can register for free, use your credit card as a method of payment with Paypal and also register your Irish bank account on there (where you could withdraw Paypal funds if you sell any items on there).

    Paypal Wiki entry.

i believe u posted the wrong link because first it would turn out to be 150 euro incl postage, second the seller is a total scammer.. just look at his feedbacks

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,372 ✭✭✭The Bollox

what do you mean, all that "he's great" is bull****?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 36,634 ✭✭✭✭Ruu_Old

Well he doesn't offer Paypal as a payment method and look at the feedbacks, none of the users are registered anymore and the items that were sold were "Buy it now" for 1.00 RMB (whatever currency that is), scammage. :)

Yep, I'm afraid it is, Marts.
This one is a praticularly badly done feedback spam.
Look at the users who gave this seller positive feedback.
They all have zero feedback themselves.
ie: they were all accounts signed up solely to give him good feedback.

***AVOID**** (just in case you didnt get the message :))
avoid this seller at all costs. I am reasonably certain that you will not recieve anything, and will be burned on this. :)

****! I bought one off him for 105 euro, what can I do about it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 36,634 ✭✭✭✭Ruu_Old

Did you pay for it yet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,374 ✭✭✭Gone West

Cancel your transaction rigt away man! Get onto your cerdit card company.
You should have taken the advice of the people on the boards.
I will eat my hat (and videotape it, and upload it to youtube, and link it here)
if you actually get an ipod off this guy.

More than likely, you will never see the money back.

I waited a minute or two for a reply and didn't get one, decided I would not find a better deal and went for it, and yes I did pay for it.

should I go to Mastercard or PayPal?

I registered as a Paypal member and I think I used it, however I was supposed to wait for an address first

Ok so he offered you an email address to send the payment via Paypal or something? What does it show in your Paypal account history when you login?

Dude, i think in this case if you have paid whatever amount you can pretty much say goodbye to it. To put it in laymans term, you just been ****ed and not to rub it in but you got ****ed by a retart who should be shot up the ass. I say this for thoese of us who buy and sell on ebay, but don't let this turn you off, ebay is a cool way to sell and buy and reach a market from Limerick to Liyba. What i would say with regard to an ipod is buy over the counter and not from ebay until you are very comfortable. The picture used to sell that ipod is quiet well known on ebay circles by now, just last Sunday my brother did just what you did from a power seller with over 35000 of a feedback only 3hrs later to receive a mail from ebay to say that the seller was under investigation so beware and just remember that if a thing looks too good to be true then it in all probability it is. Trust your instincts, thats what its for, also you may very well get your cash back in a few weeks if you went through paypal, if you did get onto it straight away.
    Rgds.

ok. I think I cancelled the payment.

it had a table with 2 rows, on one it had:

payment to such & such, €110, pending and beside that a cancel button which I pummeled.

on the other row was payment from such & such -€110 comlpeted (this was up before I pushed anything.

now it says on 4 rows

transfer to credit card -€110 completed
    cancelled payment
    status -cancelled
transfer from credit card €110 completed

someone on the xbox forums was asking about the 200 euro xbox 360's the scammers sell. I dont know how anyone could really think you would get new items for these prices. And ebay dont seem to give a ***** as these items are still for sale, hours and hours later.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 36,634 ✭✭✭✭Ruu_Old

Good you got it cancelled, next time post the link up here like you did, if you wish and ask some of us to give it a check over.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,372 ✭✭✭The Bollox

thanks God for that, I almost got effed in the a by a n00b, what does that say about me?

I think I will take a few steps away from Ebay from now on, too much politics

Ye i'd agree with you on both points, ebay are just to big to be there own police man but that aside theres some very dodgy ****ers on there, more so in the far east and ebay just don't seem to give a **** and allow these people with the worst feedback to sell, but buyers have a major part to play as well and just won't read whats on the screen half the time. I have 9 items at auction at the moment and at the end of each auction is a note for bidders with a feedback of less than 10 to please contact me before bidding otherwise there bids will be removed and what do you know, since last Sunday i've had to remove 13 bids and some 5 of them from Irish people.

Ebay's ok when you get used to it, but their aint many bargains, just full of ppl who like to win items no matter how much they have to pay even if its just £1 less than the price in their local store. Which im seeing way too much now with regards to uk bidders. And 99% of them use those sniping programs and bid in the last few secs.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,909 ✭✭✭✭Wertz

Use your common sense....if an item is too good to be true, it is....especially on desired items like iPods, games consoles, etc. If these were legit, do you not think that one of the millions of eBay users (many of whom spend the entire day just on eBay) would hvae snapped it up for resale?

Simply stop looking at low prices in Buy it Now auctions....genuine sellers offering a BIN price will generally be within 5% of the actual market value, and in many cases will just have an auction start at 99p to avoid high fees.

Another thing....when you win an auction, don't fall over yourself to pay for the item....wait until you've been invoiced; you don't get money off for paying quickly.

Don't be scared of the system...it's like anyplace else, there are ALWAYS people out to scam you....common sense and a wary eye will avoid 99% of those scams.
