Have this cooler myself and it very quiet under 2000rpm, doesnt really need to be any higher anyway.

Lads maybe im reading it wrong but I was under the impression the OP wanted a smaller fan ,

The Zalman's are excellent but are huge , the thermaltake blue Orb I have myself , its whisper quiet but also massive ( I personally like it with its cool blue light but big it definitely is !! ).

And the last Zalman posted is quite big too , all around 120mm I think.

For the OP , I think 80mm is about as small as you want to go in order to keep cool. The link you posted for your fan says its 80mm. I would imagine thats as small as anyone would dare for a modern system.

There are 60 mm fans but these are mostly very very noisy , with some exceptions , this might be good for you ,

Whats your budget. If you not ocing you mightn't wanna spend that much.
That Zalman is what I got for new rig in sig. Its huge. Aint had it in action yet......no cpu yet....OCUK liars. Highly recommended. Most expensive tho.

budget not really a consideration but i like to have a roomy case inside as small as possible with best cooling?

Smaller fans are gonna have to run faster to keep cpu cool therefore will be noisier.

I have this fan. Zalman CNPS 9500 AM2

Basically the am2 version of the one Endurance Man mentioned.
And indeed his work is done!

I know it looked big in maplin but when its in you case it doesnt look that big.
When I saw it in peats I was  "that thing is gonna squash my cpu"

As for the noise, my one came with a fan mate 2 so you can control the speed of the fan and hence the noise. But its kind of an ugly thing to stick on the outside of your case. I didnt use it.
Personally, I dont find the Zalman noisy at all. Its kind of like a gentle hum.

Overall, I have 5 fans. This one and the four than came in the my thermaltake armour. Those 4 fans are rated at 17dB and i'd say the Zalman is slightly louder.

Edit: Seven fans... forgot the ones in the psu and vga.

Get the Zalman 9500. Its guaranteed to be totally silent. Wouldn't put a smaller fan in myself. Blue led will make up for the size of it.

cpu cooling fan eh? dangit, i suppose i'm gonna have to add one of these to the new pc i'm building? any other fans needed, other then a cpu one (apart from the ones supplied with the case)?

 You get a stock heatsink & fan with the conroe. This should be good enough if you don't plan to oc. Can always add 1 later. No other fans needed, although i've put a new NorthQ fan on my gpu cos i'm gonna oc that straight away.

aah ok, gonna leave it as it is then and will add one if i decide to oc it later. i've heard that the HIS x1900xt with the iceq thing allows me to overclock my gpu without much need for another fan. so i should be ok. thanks again.

    ok went for this
    http://komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=311464

reviews say its very quiet, couldn't just that other massive one in the case

whats the deal with termal paste
    bought this
    http://komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=302888

guy who reviews it says it dangerous?

I've never put termal paste on before, although i can see the cooler i've just taken off has some paste left behind...so what do I do?
Just clean the reamins of the paste with a litlle alcohol and then apply a very thin layer of the new paste for the new fan, that simple?

    thanks

    steve

yup apply a thin layer to the top of the cpu.
the only way it could be dangerous is if you somehow miss the heat spreader on your cpu and pour it onto the circuits on your motherboard.
but you would have to be a complete idiot to do that

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,874 ✭✭✭✭PogMoThoin

Yep, just use alcohol 2 remove old paste & put pea sized blob of silver 5 on chip & spread it with credit card. Attach cpu fan, connect fan cable.........have a cup of tea.:D

Your bios might have a smart fan setting, which adjusts the fan according to temps. You'll get a fan mate with the cooler, can use this if you cant set fan in the bios. Use speedfan (or motherboard monitor) to watch temps.

by heat spreader you mean the top exposed part of the cpu i can see looking down at it while its installed in the motherboard?
    jesus i'm dragging this out amn't I.....?
