    Hi there

During an apprentship can you change from one company to another?

Also if you do 1st year etc with a local electrician is it possible to move into industry?

Thinking of doing this but need to make sure I have all questions asked before I start

    Cheers
    Noel

yes you can do it, but why would you want to? People talk and ur future boss will want to know why you left 1 yr into ur apprenticeship. A similer suitation happened my old man when he had an apprentice. Needless to say the guy in question was a pure lazy ****, however my old lad was too nice to bad mouth him. He didnt stay long in his new job either.

Once you have the 4 yrs and your qualified, you can do what you like after that. Chances are a local electrician wont keep you on because he cant afford to have the expense.

    Hi there

    Sorry abour all the questions:

I was hoping to go into industry when I qualify I presume to do this I would need some industry experience during my apprentship?

Also can you move from local electrician to industry after your 1st year or do industry not take on guys who have finished there 1 st year ie do they prefer to have the apprentices for the four years?

Also when is the best time of year to apply or does it matter?

    Cheers

You can float around from employer to employer at any time of your apprenticeship, particularly in your 1st and 2nd year. As for your employer wondering why you left your previous, they won't really give a ****e as you aren't much of a cost to them (ie -220 a week as 1st yr). I'm a carpenter myself and I've been with a few employers, the main reason for changing is to experience different aspects of the trade rather than spent 4-5yrs doing a particular aspect of carpentry. Just my thoughts anyway. pm if u have any questions man.

If you feel you are not getting enough experience or even work with the local man I am sure he will understand if you need to go elsewhere.

FAS encourage this, the more experience the better. Get on to your contact in FAS and see if there is any industry work out there. Dont feel obliged to stay with your guy if you are not getting the training... The awakening seems to know more than me, I am not in the building trade.

Best of luck in your apprenticeship...

I'm planning to do an apprenticeship program too. You've mentioned in an another thread that you've contacted with FAS.What's the story with our age (as I'm 30)?Can we start an apprenticeship without a problem?
I'm in Cork City myself too and I might pop in the FAS office on Monday.Who should I talk to there?

I'm interrested in toolmaking, but there is a little problem:
By the FAS website the closest education center for toolmaking is in Tralee.
This means in certain phases of the apprenticeship I have to spend months there? But my missus is here in Cork+the extra money to fork out for accomodation there+to travel etc.

Than I might change plans and go for the mechanic or panel beater.
I'm a qualified auto electrician, but never had a chance to gain some experience after I finished the apprenticeship (except working on my own cars).Maybe it's time to get back to the roots :) I fed up dealing with complaining/drunk hotel guests :D
