Staying on islands off Nha Trang, Vietnam

We arrived in Nha Trang today. The place itself appears to be a bit of a dive but the plan was always to try and spend as much time as possible on the nearby islands. I know there are day and overnight trips on offer, but we'd prefer to maybe go out and spend a few days. Whale Island sounds incredible but also extremely expensive. I googled for a bit and couldn't find anything except the Whale Island Resort. This is the only one mentioned in the Lonely Planet but it's extremely expensive (by backpacker standards); it's looking like at least E40/night/person. This does include all meals and transfer to the island itself from Nha Trang but it's still twice our daily budget. I had a brief look at Hon Tre but it looks like it's a similar story. Does anyone know of a good "budget island"?!

    Thanks

P.S. While I'm here, is Dalat very cold at this time of year? Would you need trousers and sweaters?
