How come when I'm extracting files with winzip or winrar, the komputer slows down so much?? In the windows process manager, its says windows is using avg. 10% of the CPU and about 30MB of RAM of 1GB.

    Why? Tell me why?

Because its having to read and write from the hard drive heavily...I reckon :)

As hopeful says it's because of the increased disk i/o. The simultaneous reading and writing to disk for the ZIP/RAR extraction is slowing down access for everything else so whenever something else needs to read or write it grinds to a halt.

I was bored today so did a little testing (was REALLY bored :) )
Time to unzip is reduced if you read from one disc and write to another...but the difference is only a few seconds over a 2gb split .rar file. Don't know if 10,000 rpm discs would make a difference but if someone wants to give me one I'll happily test it :)

Also having 1gb ram vs 2gb made no change at all.

    How bored was I today????
