What does everyone think? Should the makers stay loyal to the games, or give the film a new spin?

Personally I think they should be completely loyal, because the storyline is the main thing that makes a game good

Also, the atmosphere you feel watching the film should be the same as playin the games

Also, the movies that are different from the games are only good to the people who make the film, thats why they think its great

    Speak

Should Computer Game movies be heavily based on the storyline of the games? 20 votes

Yes! Thats wha makes the games good

Varies from game to game i think.

I mean they're different elements of the story in computer games that make them good.

For example Half Life, one could either follow it directly, first movie in black mesa etc.

Or they could jump into the City 17 enviroment.

they're advantages and disadvantages to both.

You go the direct route, your goin to have to cast Gordon Freeman, which is an extremely difficult haphazard task, cause if you get it wrong, you seriously got it wrong. Then there are elements which dont work. Freeman spends 80% of the game on his own, you will need a really skilled filmmaker to keep audiance interested without character interaction. Approving character interaction and you hit brick walls such as comedic sidekick, rival, and villian. Which could completely destroy the film.

Or you can move away from Freeman, you can do a film post black mesa -pre half life 2. you can set a film in city 17 before freeman shows up. Or have one running parallel to Freeman, allowing the filmmaker freedom, but also keeping important plot details and reverances for fans, while not alienating casual viewers.

THe main thing a computer game movie needs to get across that most have failed so far is the same atmosphere asthe original game. I fully approve someone creating new plotlines and characters, if they can still create the same atmosphere I felt when I played the game.

Silent Hill has been the closest we have had to this.

so your poll is a bit awkard cause its not a 50/50 choice.

the atmosphere! thats what I couldnt think of

So, thats what I mean in the poll, you should feel the same way watchin the film as you do playin the games

The Movie should be exactly the same as the story of the Game. Take Mortal Kombat the story is basically there but the whole Scorpian and Sub Zero thing is ruined in the film.

Personally I liked Resident evil the movie but it would have been much better if the proper characters were there, and the game story line, Obviously cut down to fit 2 hours but still should be the same.

This takes me to my next point, Metal Gear Solid, please God dont let this film be ruined, The game plays exactly like a movie so the EXACT same stucture should be done for the Movie. (Fingers Crossed), The best cut scene EVER in a game is during the fight with Metal Gear in the first PS game. you know the one when you beat metal gears first energy bar and Grey Fox comes out, awh I'm getting chills thinking about it, "Tell her for me, tell her I was the one who killed her Parants... Here's a final present from Deepthroat...I'll stop it from moving!!!!!" AHHHH Love it

Imagine seeing that on live action film on a cinema screen.

    its still not 50/50.

    i would make the choice.

*Doesnt necessarily follow the plotline, but draws heavily from the games atmoshphere.*

but i dont really see that choice up there.

I think a lot of concessions should be made for the film format. There were some downright cringeworthy bits in Silent Hill where the main characters were walking around collecting objects and evidence that would lead them to the next place to go. This works in a videogame but is ridiculous in a film that wants to be taken seriously. Also when the director decides to rip-off a scene from a game they could at least make them better or as good as the same scene in the game. The homages in the Resi films were ineffective and stuff like pyramid head and the weird babies were far less effective than in the Silent Hill game. Mortal Kombat on the other hands mostly succeeds with some nifty fight scenes that you would expect from a movie of the game and also everybodies favourite special moves are present and rather nicely done.

They should make up a new plot using the basic outline set by the game.

It worked for street fighter :D

Varies from game to game. I mean, some games could translate perfectly to the big screen while others wouldn't be suited.

Another problem with being 'too' loyal to the game is confusing viewers who are unfamiliar with it (ie, Silent Hill).

Not going to vote here. ;)

I mean, a game that relies heavily on it's story is one thing, but a game with essentially no filmable plot, you can't exactly stick to the same story there. Besides, being completely loyal to the subject doesn't ensure a good film.

There is no 'generally' about it. Games vary too much.

"Here's a final present from Deepthroat...I'll stop it from moving!!!!!"

If that came up in any movie I would break out laughing. The movie should follow a different storyline but create a similar atmosphere to when playing the games. Games have very cheesey dialogue that just don't work in movies.

    Vin Diesel for 47, wrong.

I would have even preferred Jason Statham over him.

Hitman movie should be like Leon, without the gayness of Luc Bessons love story.

    Heheh:

    lol @ the picture...

Statham would look the part, but I can't stand him after seeing him in the hideously awful Transporter films

Game movies are always gonna be tricky. Say what you like about it but take the Mario movie for example. Generally regarded as just a big old bucket of crazy right? Well putting aside the fact that I actually liked it, how much more crazy would it have been if the film actually hadd been two hours of Leguizamo and Hoskins running through a pastel coloured universe jumping on the heads of little brown Goomba's, fleeing flying phiranas etc. all to rescue a pink dress wearing princess who get's kidnapped every second week? Filmakers need to think about it rationally. Obviously with game movies you are allowed to suspend your disbelief but make it credible. If you are adament about faithfulness then keep character names, keep a bit of the look and atmosphere of the game but also make something new that stands up for itself
