I've always found it's best to book separately. I'm flying Delta - there's a stop in Shannon on the way out but nothing on the way back - better than Aer Lingus who had the stopover coming back. I got flights for €280 although I booked last February for December.

January is the best time to go - the hotels are at their cheapest and the sales are still on! I went there in 2001 in January - it had snowed really badly over Christmas but by the time we got there around the 11th they had swept it to the side and kept on going.

Trip Advisor are good for hotel reviews.

Would definitely recommend January. Was there for 5 nights this January and it was a great time to go. Nowhere was too busy, we never had to queue! Plus, it's great going back to work after Christmas for just a few weeks and then flying off to New York to beat the New Year blues!

We flew Aer Lingus and found them perfect. We'd no stopovers though.

We stayed in the Comfort Inn, Manhattan. Booked through Choice Hotels and again, had no problems whatsoever...http://www.choicehotels.com/ires/en-US/html/HotelInfo?hotel=NY410 It is so close to everything. We walked everywhere!

Book seperately, it isn't like a resort where the best deals are with a package holiday. Have a good look on the net for flights, I have gone over a couple of times, and Aer Lingus was the best value both times. I found that the flights were cheaper on Wednesdays.

A hotel might be a little cheaper through a travel agent - I think "American Holidays" is one of the main operators, and most the agents probably deal with them. I went to book a place online, but there was a massive booking charge, which was effectively the cost of an additional night's rate. An agent can probably get you a better rate than you would on your own.

Remember that you pay a premium for staying in NY. A 4* hotel over here is generally way nicer than one in NY. I stayed in Fitzpatricks on both Lexington Avenue and Grand Central, and neither of them were what I expected for a 4* hotel.
