I want to be able to:

    1. Back up the data held on my home computer
    2. Store photos/videos that I currently have on my computer

    - could someone please tell me of an easy way to do these two things please? (also, is it bad memory wise to store photos/vids onto my computer in the first place?)

Also!, a friend of mine has a laptop which she want to use primarily for her business.. I'm going to set up her accounts/spreadsheets etc onto her laptop - is there an easy way of copying everything from her laptop over to a desktop so there's always a copy held somewhere..........

Thank you all very much for your help!!

They are fine on the computer unless you are afraid someone will get a hold of them and end up on the internet.
Have you got an external or second hard drive you can back this stuff up to?

What does she need copied over? If its just documents, pick up a keychain drive like that and you are away, assuming she has a USB port.

Thank you Ruu. No dodgy photos/vids!! 'family' photos!!! And Lots of them - I was worried in case I am taking up too much memory? Yes, I have a second desktop I could back them up to - how do I do that please ?(I'm pathetic) - should I just back them up onto disks ? or is this not the best way......

It will just be excel spreadsheets to be copied.... so if she buys one of these (should she get one of a particular memory - I am lost with these key thingys, I got one free with a mobile phone and have no idea what to do with it!!) .. and what do you do with it please?.. If she has a spreadsheet - do you just stick in the stick, copy file to stick/take out stick/put stick in other desktop and copy file from stick...? (what Am I like?!!).. Thanks!

Yep thats exactly it, just plug it in, copy over the file, plug it out and into the new machine. Unless you have Windows 95 or 98 there are no driver disks required. You can get them with different amounts of memory, anything from 64mb-4gbs I believe.

Ruu - you are a star..always very helpful.....

Last question, the videos and photos I have currently stored on my laptop - do these take up lots of memory?.. should I just have them on on my spare desktop or on disks?.. Thanks.

They are probably taking up a good amount of memory, depending on the quality of the photos and format of the videos. You could put them on another hard disk or pick up an external hard drive like this one which would be more than enough for videos, photos and things, providing you have a usb port (which is like this).

Got you... thanks. I could move them from my laptop and put them onto my desktop harddrive.

Do you not recommend saving them onto CDs/DVDs?

Oh yeah its no problem burning them to CDs or DVDs, I'm just used to have a heap of external hard drives and storing things on them. They would be perfectly fine on CDs or DVDs.
