IDE Harddrive, SATA computer.

I have a dell dimension 4700 - good computer, although the actual box is *very* pokey to work with.
The hard drive in it is a 140GB SATA, and there are ports for an additional SATA hard drive. However I have a 250GB IDE hard drive here, no SATA. I tried buying a SATA to IDE adapter from eBay, but it didn't work - the computer just doesn't see that a hard drive is plugged in. Is there something I need to watch for when using these adapters? Maybe mine is just a dud.

If not, is there any other way of connecting this IDE hard drive to my SATA computer? It has no floppy drive, can it be connected up on the ports that a floppy would have used? What about where the second CD drive is now? (Could remove one)...
Any help would be much appreciated.

Your CD drive is most likely IDE - remove one and connect the hard drive instead. IDE cables usually have two connections = two devices. Depending on the number of IDE connectors on your motherboard you can have either 2 (one motherboard connector) or 4 (two motherboard connectors) IDE devices connected at once.

swap you an 80gig SATA for your crappy IDE drive?

250GB VS 80GB? I'll swap no bother, but I'll be looking for €120 with it.
Edit: Thanks, WizZard. I can connect a hard drive to the same IDE cable as my CD drive so? (AFAIK the cable has two connectors on it, at the moment going into each CD drive).
Anything I need to do in bios to make it work?
    THanks again

You will need to switch the jumpers on the hard drive to act as the slave drive (on the same cable as the cd rom), look at the rear of the drive and you will see the jumper pins. The CD ROM is probably set as the master drive.

I was joking. You get jokes?
Also, your drive is barely worth 80 euro by itself :)

You will have to do without one of your optical drives it seems.
Or else, mabye RTFM'ing the IDE/SATA converter and getting it working.

Damn outdated technology, hehe... Don't particularly need 2 CD drives anyway, thanks.

If you don't mind which one did you get, I have an old IDE drive and was thinking of getting one of them?

Do you mean it doesn't show in my computer?

If its XP, you will need to go into computer management and enable the volume for it to show up.

Tried that okay, but nope - doesn't appear anywhere, the bios doesn't even recognize it.

It worked fine replacing my second CD drive though, thanks!
