    His Royal Excellency
“I’m here just as an observer,” Phil Hellmuth says. “I love to watch this game—plus, I have a piece of quite a few players still in the event. I’m really an ambassador for the game and for Harrah’s, talking with all the players.”

I want him to say how his presence bolsters the confidence of the troops—he is a lightning rod for all things good and holy, is he not? “What do you think about the current play?” I ask. “This is a precarious time, near the bubble…”

“Absolutely,” he says. “A lot of people are playing to cash. For them, making a few thousand dollars is important—so the champions, the world champions in the making, are in there stealing all those pots to pick up chips. That’s the way I would do it: I only care about first so I’d attack every pot towards that end. That’s what the greats do.”

It’s such a great time to be in poker,” Phil continues. “I’m on Cloud Ten.”

He wants me to ask if he means “Cloud Nine” instead of “Cloud Ten” but I get the joke and just let him give the punch line.

“You know why I mean Cloud Ten?” he asks, but doesn’t wait for an answer. “Because of my … TEN … bracelets.” He wiggles his fingers in the air—yep, there are ten of them. Just like he has ten bracelets. That’s amazing, Phil.

I say nothing and of course Phil doesn’t need prompting to bloviate on: “Of course, I’m not the only one with ten bracelets: the Legends Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan have ten as well, but I’m working on my eleventh tomorrow.”

Didn’t Johnny and Doyle each make it to 10th first (and second) respectively? No need to talk about that…

“I’m also first in cashes, with fifty five. No one has ever cashed as much as me.”

“Doesn’t Men Nguyen claim to have fifty five cashes as well?” I ask, sensing the dialogue near over so why not torpedo it.

“Yes, he does, but one or two of those I dispute—regardless: I’m going to beat him and everyone to a hundred just like I’m going to be the first to eleven bracelets

I pride myself on being able to express my feelings in writing.... but I simply cannot find the words to convey how much I fucking hate that guy...

You sir, are mad. Watch any of the High Stakes Poker episodes and tell me he's a good cash holdem player. Anyway, I dont care if he's the Kasparov of hold'em... he's a knob-jockey of the highest order.

Do people here not talk about judging your play on several thousand hands in order to get a true picture of your play?

I can think of 5 players off the top of my head who's NLH tournament play is better then Helmouths in history. I can think of 20 players who can play all forms of poker better then Helmouths (remember almost all of his bracelets are in NLH... there are many other forms of Poker).

But thats not really the question... he could win every bracelet here this year, he's still an unmittigated c0ck.

He takes all his beats like a whining child.
He displays no respect for anyone and certainly has no respect for how others see him.
He is pure comedy gold..... So long as he loses. :D

I love it when he gets beat que Kevin Keegan impression

But i saw him on Celebrity poker thing last week (he is the new resident expert) and he is a complete gimp

The advice he was giving was complete Sh1t
Essentially late in tournament he was suggesting raising every hand and calling every raise back with any 1 broadway card

Keep posting about him and talking about him, I heard he really really hates it when you do that.

These threads follow the same pattern anyway: 98.75% of people will say what a knob he is, the other 1.25% (his fan-boys) will say he's a genius. It's all been done. He probably will win more bracelets; with the amount of events he plays, variance will throw him the odd bone here and there, but at the end of the day he doesn't deserve any respect because he IS such a w**nker.

I think Hellmuth is one of the top Tournament players ever. His ten bracelets in Hold'em speak for themselves. He makes great TV and if you ask me, he is good for the game. He's attitude is questionable but thats up to everyone to decide if the like/hate the guy. As far as poker goes...no one can dispute his record.

he's a bad guy wrestler and i love it.

as long as i never have to meet him...

    This comment is really unfair.

    Doyle's first bracelet was in 1976. His 10th? 2005 29 years later
    Chan's first was in 1985. His 10th? 2005 20 years later
    Hellmuth's first, 1989. His 10th - 2006 17 years later

No need to talk about that...

and he's also won, cashed, and final tabled in plenty of Omaha, Omaha Hi/Lo and Seven Card Stud, 7 Card Hi/Lo, and even Ace to Five Draw and S.H.O.E. events.

right. having defended him, i will now say that i really find him to be an arrogant camera whore

I also agree that Helmuth is good for the game, he is bound to get it more recognised with his utter arrogance and ignorance. He is a muppet of the highest order and tbh I dont think he can ever be regarded as "the" best hold em player of all time.
    Stu Ungar maybe?

well ungar says and a lot of ppl agreed that when he pld properly(not high or drunk etc) no-one was a match for him

Dev don't sit on the fence... Tell us what you really feel.

    My poker table of hell.....

Seat 1 Paul The Hangman Roper
    Seat 2 Phil Hellmuth
Seat 3 Mike The Mouth Matusow
    Seat 4 Tony Rafter
Seat 5 Some bloke called Tom Murphy when He's on Tilt.
    Seat 6 Tony G
    Seat 7 Sammy Farha
    Seat 8 Tiffany Williamson
    Seat 9 Annie Duke
    Seat 10 Me

Can you imagine trying to play on that table? Hellmuth, Matusow, Rafter and Tony G would be at it all the time. Tom tilting is a sight to behold - plus he'd be calling Hellmuth an unmitigated cock evry two seconds. Then with Roper you wouldn't know what he's got. Farha's just a brilliant player who would just sit back abd stare into your soul. Ready to steal your chips at a moments hesitation. Tiffany Williams [Possibly the worst player ever to get so far in a tournament] would dwell up on a fold for days on end. And Annie Duke - I just hate - For no particular reason.[Not that I think she likes me either.]

But personally I love to watch the car crash that is Hellmuth

Regardless of what u think of the guys poker play, he is the most entertaining spectacle in the poker world. If most people had his level of success they would be as much of a twat as he is. he only plays the persona expect and what him to play

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,646 ✭✭✭cooker3

Looking at Kegs OP i cant help but be reminded of the Carol Coleman interview with President Bush that time. I think its easy to forget that the American media seem to give their public figures such an easy ride that you can hardly blame Hellmuth for prompting the Cloud Ten thingy, he's probably so used to getting led in that direction of questioning, followed by a huge fake smile/laugh from the interviewers after his punchline; just as Bush seems to get away with so many soft questions and a series of lame scripted answers. I dont think they can handle any grit or intelligence in their interviews.

I dont watch enough poker on tv to know if he's as bad as people say he is, but there always seems to be more than a touch of ego/arrogance about the greats in any sport/discipline, Mohammed Ali all the way to present day Tiger Woods n Roger Federer. I'm sure in Hellmuths case (being a dick or not) he is smart enough to know that his on-camera antics coupled with his results will always maintain him a high profile.

Did you use this as an excuse to have a rant at bush!

I used to despise this guy until i realised that it was my envy over his success that made me furious about his idiocy. I still think he is an egomaniac but now I love him! He's a world class joke and it cracks me up to watch him lose it! he's the same as the general in the fitz, sometimes he can really get on your goat but mostly he's just great comedy value.

i sure hope he doesn't smell as bad.

last friday in mid rant he informed some jackass student 'I professional gamblor!' I couldn't love them more if they were my own red headed step children.

i understand he got a roasting when he got knocked out of the wsop this year, that's gotta be painful, no matter how thick skinned you are.

I think having a hugh desire to win and a belief that you, and you alone, are the best can cause peoples personalities to be the way Phil's is. Schumacher, Ali, McEnroe, etc. all suffer with the same problem.

I think in Phils case, a lot of it is just part of the show and its what keeps him in the spotlight. I also think that he has played a bigger part in bringing the poker boom than any other single player (possibly with the exception of Brunson)

My own opinion of him.... I wouldn't like to know him on a personal level but, I think he brings an element of entertainment to a poker table, from a spectators point of view, that very few other players do. Who wouldn't rather watch a table of Helmuths playing, than a table of Iveys??

and for those who still didn't see it.... Watch it here!!

A whole table of Hellmuths would make for the most entertaining (from a spectators p.o.v) game of poker ever!

    Ah, a classic :)

Got a chuckle from reading this thread on 2+2..would love to see a video of it.

My own view of Hellmuth is that yeah, he is an absolute cock but hes a good character for poker and very entertaining to watch.

hellmuths a legend, most entertaining player in my opinion. Im surprised a lot of people hate him, I thought the general consensus was he was a lovable rogue

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,212 ✭✭✭MrPillowTalk

I dont have a problem with Phil, in much the same way I dont have a problem with a dog ****ting on the carpet ........... its in their nature.

What I have a problem with is that the coverage Hellmuth gets lets every other cock who can hold two cards behave like he does at a poker table and think its ok to do so. I witnessed two hellmuth blow ups personally in the last three weeks and thought they were both hillarious, I also witnessed a hellmuth esque charade at EVERY table I sat at in vegas from some idiot who thinks its ok to behave like a kn0b jockey because they see him do it on tv.

People may have missed this but he almost got his 11th bracelet. He came 3rd in the $1500 event yesterday. He has now overtaken Jeff Madsen in the POY standings and unless Allen Cunningham wins (I think) then he will win it.

Legend in my book!! There is no one i would prefer watching.

i remember a great line from from Matasow in the bad boys of poker 2 wpt event they had.

matasow said something to the affecct that "sure he'll tell you he has won 9 braclets but what he wont tell you is that 7 of them were in 30 player fields"

Im pretty sure none of phil's bracelets were in fields of that few people. Just matusow trying to rile him up.

You should have heard him last night doing commentary for final table on espn, he was generally ignoring table and talking about his world series. "well I have cashed for 55th time in this world series which is a record by the way"
    It was hilarious!
