More specifically, people smoked regular cigs and switched to rollies, how did you find the transition? Do/did you smoke more/less? How does the expense work out, is it dearer/cheaper?

I smoke Major at the moment, 20~30 a day, too many and too expesive for my liking really.

And I dont want any non-smokers sayin "just fckin quit blah blah blah" please!

How much is a bag of tobacco? Do you use filters or not? And which brand do you smoke?

I presume there's no smoking forum, I couldnt find one! :p

Cutter's choice or drum light are your best choice.
    I enjoy rolling.
    Green rizzlas ftw.
You rip up the skins packet as a 'filter'.
    It's 2.something for tobacco isn't it?
    Can't remember.

And how's the price, how much is a bag an how long/how many cigs roughly will one last?

Yeah I've tried Drum before, quite pleasant.

I edited in a rough price. Skins are less than a euro.
How many depends on how big your skins are/how many you use at once.
Also, Cutters choce is the best. :)

You've little chance of getting a hold of Sarge at the moment, PM Papa Smut for access.

Can't remember the cost of a bag, has been a long time since I've bought one.Roughly €7 for a large bag iirc.
The only brands I'd smoke were Drum and Golden Virginia. Avoid Cutters Choice at all cost.

Edit: Just read Tars post..It is not! It's filthy tasting!

Skins are around 20cent. Some people prefer just rolling one skin cigarettes, in which case a pack of skins lasts a good while. Others prefer 3 skins which is far too long imo. Then king skins are about one and a half regular skins, more paper but a pretty regular length for a cigarette really

:O Not a fan of cutters?
    and ...7 euro?

I remember the large bags (40g?) being around €7, I may be wrong...
Nah not a fan of Cutters at all at all!

Oh, I've never even noticed another size than what I get.

Some people use three skins bt have a two skin length, the third is for more stick.
    Jumbo ftw.

How long could one expect to go without replacing this mysterious bag of tobacco. Just so that I'm not asking how long a piece of string is, please assume that standard issue cigarettes are being rolled.

i smoke golden virginia -- was a marlboror man before rollies -- rollies are much cheaper, i only smoke a bag or 2 a week -- 7 euros a bag -- i prefer marlboro , so i smoke less by default -- rollies don't have same amount of chemicals as regular cigs , so are less harmfull , or so the theory goes -- but i do get a dry cough now and then from them -- but certainly a lot cheaper .

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,866 ✭✭✭Adam

    Thats the ticket, lovely job!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,999 ✭✭✭solas

    as above

I used smoke 20 benson a day and changed over to golden virginia about a month ago. I pouch will last me 4-5 day's @ €7 a pouch.
They don't have as many chemicals and you will notice the difference.
I'm not sure how many I smoke a day maybe a little less than before but only because they tend to go out if not kept going and so you can leave them down and come back to them when needs be.

(p.s. I was attempting to quit initially too)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,598 ✭✭✭ferdi

cheaper and less butane and aircraft fuel than regular ready made smokes. however, no filter.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,999 ✭✭✭solas

you can buy swan filters in a tobaconists, box of 100 really cheap (last time I bought were only 50p although that was years ago), dunno maybe €2 or so. Make sure you don't go heavy on the tobacco when lining up a roll, a little goes a long way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,819 ✭✭✭✭thebaz

you can by a box of 100 filters for 2 euros, i always use them, as apart from improving the smoke, they filter out some of the excess bad stuff.

I smoke Camel Lights when I'm out, because I can't be arsed rolling when I'm in a packed "super"pub. Rollies at home and in the local.

I smoke Drum Light Blue, using Rizla, usually the green skins. I like the Drum pack that has the sticky part for the skins, and the velcro closing mechanism. It's a nice mellow smoke. I use filters all the time, the slim ones, which saves baccy. A pack will usually last about three to five days, but then, I'm a bit of a heavy smoker, especially when sitting in a beer garden with a few pints.

Jaysis, when I was in The USA I got that Natural American stuff, brittle as hell, I needed a rolling machine for that.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,215 ✭✭✭FranknFurter

Was thinking of switching to rollies for purely financial reasons.
Problem is, with the M.S. my hands are prone to shaking and trembling some days.
Are those little "rolling machines" still available? Difficult to use?

You can get a rolling machine in argos, know nothing about them though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 41,926 ✭✭✭✭_blank_

Here is a rolling machine for sale. They are very easy to use, but in my opinion they roll the smokes too tight.

I have the red version of that particular machine. You can also get them in Asha I think.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,866 ✭✭✭Adam

I might get me one of those rolling machines, I like a nice tight ciggy and my rolling skillz are prob gone to sh1te these days...

I'd be of the same opinion. But to whoevers buying them, sure you can experiment with the rolling machine and see what suits you. I think you can roll them looser, I just never managed to..

drum light is €3.40 for a 12.5 gramme pack.
    skins cost 30 cent.
use the packaging from the skins as a roach.

i always have a pack of tobacco handy for when i run out of proper smokes. 4am type of thing. it happens more often than you would imagine and it's handy to have the 'bacca there.
cuts the throat out of you though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,866 ✭✭✭Adam

Would everybody use roach/filter? I probably wouldn't be too pushed myself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,061 ✭✭✭✭Terry

i just use it because it's what i'm used to from my hash smoking days.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 60,113 Mod ✭✭✭✭Tar.Aldarion

I use it because they are the only das I have ever known. :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,856 ✭✭✭✭Dave!

You can buy a little "book" of filters, to save you havin to rip up your box of skins. Dunno how good they are though, but if you're smokin 20-30 a day, then you soon won't have a box left for your shhhkinnns if you keep ripping it up!!!

have rolled my own for years, golden virginia, green papers and filter tips,i hate smoking without the filters now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,522 ✭✭✭✭Gordon

I smoke rollies as I am trying to cut down vastly.

I smoke tiny rollups and people comment on how they look like toothpicks instead of cigarettes. I use silver rizlas as they contain the least amount of paper, and no filters as they don't fit. A small 25g pack of Golden Virginia light/gold lasts about two weeks. But I still need to stop.

Rolling is good if you want to cut down imo.

Whenever i use a roach as a filter , its a much harsher smoke , and gives me that dry throat -- much better to splash out the 2 euros for the standard filters -- i usually throw a few filters in my GV carton -- but sometimes run out when out -- and as i say much harsher .

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 41,926 ✭✭✭✭_blank_

Yeah, unfiltered are very harsh on the throat. I usually throw a handful of filters into each pack of tobacco I buy.

Hmmm, I might like to join the smokers forum.

    Not Your Ornery Onager

Amber Leaf is pretty good. You get a 12.5g box with free papers for €3.40. You might find it handy to have an empty plastic wallet from some other brand to tip it into.

    Not your ornery onager

Its more expencive per packet but lasts longer. Could you easly change brand of cig's? Compare the change similar to that. + More effort to kill your self -> need to make the cig before smoking.

End up with tobaco stains, if not on your teeth, definitly on your fingers.

You get looked down on from 2 angles.
    1) Poor bastard....
    2) Is that a joint?

    *Disclaimer*
    I smoke.

Dude, i know that type of things your arte calling cig's.... (you well with in your rights to flame me...)But when 25g lasts 2 weeks, why are you bothering to smoke?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 463 ✭✭ullu

Samson is the nicest tobacco in my opinion, followed by Golden Virginia.

I don't think the papers you use are too important so just use a few different types and see what you're happiest with. I found ZigZags to be unnecessarily heavy so I wouldn't bother with them.

Use filters, the best are the Swan slimline ones. Unfortunately, they're not available in most newsagents, I generally get them in one of the two cigar shops beside each other on College Green.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,790 ✭✭✭cornbb

I switched to rollies before I quit smoking. You'll get used to them in no time - they work out far cheaper. A 12.5g pack of Drum light costs €3 something and lasts for about 30 cigarettes. Buy blue rizla and boxes of filter tips and you're rolling.

Not trying to encourage you to smoke, of course, but I'm sure Drum light will be better for you than 20 major a day..

Edit: where can one find this Smoking forum btw?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 324 ✭✭JaysusMacfeck

Drum Light, blue skins and Swan filters. I really enjoy rolling and it's a lot cheaper than buying tailor-mades. I think you'll quickly get used to them.

    I smoke about 20 - 30 rollies a day

dont bother with a machine - get a little bamboo mat in visuals for a euro, its designed for rolling a normal sized joint & the smallest ive some across.

good for keeping your smokes\whatever in

I used to go through 1-2 packs of cutters choice a week, & would smoke the equivelent of 20 a day - big saving. If I still smoked I'd prob go with amber leaf - almost the same as cutters but slightly nicer.

Some people are saying golden virginia is good but ill still avoid that in a joint -horrible stuff imo

try golden virginia, c/choice, amber leaf see what ya like the best.

I never used filters but its probably advisable

bit of advice regarding skins /papers :-
Rizla used to make great papers, but i guess to maximise there profits, they have reduced the glue on the papers , and for the past year the don't stick .. use zigzag instead -- at least they stick ..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 175 ✭✭exCrumlinBoyo

When I smoked rollies, I would buy Cutters Choice as I refused to spend all that money on 20 Blue. Cutters Choice like anything took a bit of getting used to, but once I got used to it, I would not change it for anything. Green Skins as everyone says is your man.

Now is been about 4 years since I last lived in Dublin. Moved to the states and started smoking Marlbourgh Lights at $2 bucks a pack $19 for a carton of 200. About 2 years later, they jumped up to $25 bucks a carton, which in comparison is still a whole bunch cheaper than back in Ireland. Now I smoke a generic brand of Marlbourgh called 305's and they cost me $15.04 a carton of 200 and they are a lovely brand of smoke. By the way, that’s 11 euro 66 cents. I don’t think you would get 40 John Player Blue for the 200 I get here in Sunny Florida.

Cutters Choice is your best bet and I actually cut down smoking while smoking that brand. I would make rollies of the same size as they would make in Mount Joy.

I used to smoke JP blue years ago but switched to the blue drum in collage I did cut down allot at work now I only have 3 during the day.

It slows you down allot at first because you actually have to roll them and you may not have the time so you have to wait, you also don't chug threw them while driving again because you can't roll while driving.

A 25g pack cost me something like €7 and lasts 2 days but if your in spain you can get a 10 pack of 50g for €40 that will last you the best part of a month.

I don't use filters just a roach I used to be able to roll without a roach but every so often youd get the tobaco coming off on your lips. That's the worst part about rolling. You just have to make sure the roach is in tight. no gap between the end of the tobaco and roach. I don't think filters are nessesary once you get used to the taste there actually quiet nice

Now when I smoke ordinary cigs they taste fowl and sometimes give me sore troats. Also smoke at least 3 times more.

If you really want to cut down start smoking spliffs then it feels pointless smoking ciggs.
