I just bought a DVD drive in Soundstore in Cork. I also bought some DVD-Rs and some DVD-DLs the next day. Now it turns out that the drive won't recognise the DLs.

What kind of madness is this. It says on the box that it's compatible, and it's only once I read the pdf that it says only certain makes and models of DVD DLs are supported. How can they get away with this. There are international standards established. Surely that should be enough.

There are too many combinations to guarantee compatibility between all discs and drives.
Have you checked whether there is an updated firmware revision available for the drive?
Did you buy the discs in the same store as the drive?
More info., please: What make/model drive? What discs?

I realised I kinda side-stepped a point of your post: Companies have used different dyes to achieve different aims: to reduce costs, to improve reliability, to improve burn speeds, etc. Each has their own thoughts on how it should be done - if it was simply 1 standard, 1 dye, 1-everything - you'd be complaining that discs cost even more than they currently do and burn much slower. Compatibility may be provided by updating the drive's firmware.

    I have the latest firmware(1.5).
The drive is a Philips Dual Format Double Layer DVDR1660K/00 http://www.philips.com
The disks are Traxdata DVD+R DL http://www.traxdata.com

I bought both the drive and the media from the same shop, but on different days.
