Just looking at a review of the 30D and it says it has spot metering.
Does this mean that the metering point can be selected at a certain spot ,or is it something similar to whats on the 350D??
I'm just trying to see what the difference is really ,I don't think I could justify buying the camera at the moment as it's only got the same pixels as the 350D

Spot metering would be just being able to pick any one of the 9 AF points that the 30d has (think its 9 on the 30d it is on the 20d). The 1ds for example can pick ANY one or more than one of the 45 AF Points to use that combination as the metering points which would be an advantage. You could always meter on the centre point by moving that point to cover the area you want the metering to adjust for - then when the shot is ready move the camera back with your finger held half way down and snap when you have re-framed it.

I think it's decent enough to be able to use centre weighted metering on the 350D, and just either zoom right in on what you want to meter, and read from that, then set the shutter/aperture manually, recompose and shoot, or if you can't reach the thing you want to meter from just choose something nearby that's the same tone.

It might be worth starting to read up on the zone system - I found it pretty good to get my head round the whole metering malarkey when I was starting to get into it. That's not to say I understand it even now, mind you ;)
