    Hi All,
Trying to improve my poker and just wondering if anyone had advice on whereabouts this figure should be.
I realise that with some players, even on this site, it varies from 10% to 40% or so.
Obviously it's game dependant but say your average game 8-9 players, some fish, some rocks.

    Any advice?

While I agree that there is no magic formula winning number :- I play mostly cash games and shorthanded ones at that:- I would say the best winning range tends to be between 20-30% vpip here :- Go too far below 20 and it's tight poker, go too far above 30 and it's loose - not saying u can't win playing tighter or looser than that 20-30 range preflop but if I had to recommend a range that would be it for shorthanded play certainly I don't think there's many guys who call 40% and above who are winning players - if they r they need to be superb post flop.

Extrapolating from my shorthand experience I would say In a full ring game that ur talking about you have more opposition so it follows that u need to be tighter - the most successful range would be somewhere in the region of 14%-21% vpip I reckon

Again just to make perfectly clear I'm not saying people can't win playing looser or tighter than this - there's more than one way to skin a cat - but again if ur vpip is more than say 30% in a full ring game - u need to be superb post flop.

I'll have a look at my pokertracker db tonight and c what the most successful percentiles are anyway just to confirm I'm not talking BS ;)

P.S. My last day in my office job - from next week I finally go full-time pro :D

for real, you going pro? Best of luck.

Full Ring I'm in between 14-21%, but only at it a short while, but so far so good

As already stated above the % on flops seen depends on few key factors:

    1.your style of play
2.number of players on the table
3.skill level of players on the table
4.how loose or tight your table is playing.

However the fact remains that even though the above mentioned play a huge role in how tight or loose you should be playing, in order to properly adjust your game to the above factors you need to be experienced and know what your doing and why your doing it. if you can understand why you should be factoring in the above in your style and know how to adjust accordingly then fine but if you have any questions or cant understand why then you cant go wrong by just playing tight.

My record was 61% and I won the tourney. It was only a FPP on PokerStars to get into another tourney for tickets to the Irish Open main event.

My usual is 25% to 30%. Last night I was down at about 20% as I could not get a decent card.

The % hands played has no meaning. I prefer to look at the number of hands won compared to the number of hands played, and in particular how many hands shown at the river were winners. No point in going to the river to lose. The river is where you get paid. Someone put in chips to see you. Hopefully you bet all the way.

Sorry meant to reply sooner to say thanks. I'm not going 100% full-time pro - I am just going to be working from home for myself all poker related stuff though - but maybe only about 30% of my working time I will actually be playing poker. Very early days but my 1st week out of regular office work has gone well anyway :)

Getting back to the subject of post looking back through my pokertracker database loose aggressive players i.e. those with over 46% vpip who are aggressive are actually winning players overall but so are tight aggressive players i.e. those who are aggressive and have vpip < 33%.

So I to eat my words on my priginal post here :( Also if you look at this url http://www.andymcnish.btinternet.co.uk/newauto.htm you will see that aggressive players are more likely to be winning players irrespective of whether their tight or loose - though i think extremely tight or loose is never good.

The beauty of poker I guess - completely different ways of playing can be successful if well executed.
