Hi i would like o set up a magazine ,i know what the basic theme will be but what next?there will be a lot of photography involved but where do i go from here?what equipment do i need?where or how can i go to learn
about useing this equipment and then how would i go about marketing this??like how does a magazine or product in general go from a pilot production to a full on regular production??i mean do you just show your product to people from spar ,supervalu etc.and then they review it and decide if its shelf worthy?oh and its basically an adult magazine so would there be a huge issue with censorship or are them days thankfully in the past??thanx

I dont know any specifics about setting up a magazine but I saw a program about 4 years ago on RTE about a guy who tried to launch a new gossip magazine in Ireland...it was on sale for about 6 mnths, cant remember the name of it but i think the guy involved was John Ryan(?) - multi-millionaire who has since gone on to launch a magazine in NY about dogs and cats and pets in general)....anyway, the magazine failed. And it cost him something crazy like half a million to produce the 6 issues.

You havent said what scale you are thinking about but if it is aimed at being sold in newsagents you need to think about:

    - getting people to write the articles weekly/monthly - this is very difficult if you dont have a staff of writers/contributers
    - getting photos of whatever it is the magazine is about
    - selling advertising
    - getting shops on board to sell it - how do you deal with the money?
    - getting it printed and distributed to shops
    - PR to get the word around that it is coming out
    - marketing campaign
    - computer equipment to put the issue together

and all the millions of decisions that go into getting the above done. It is a daunting task.

Have you done any market research to see if there is a market for your magazine.
You will be competing with a load of other expensively produced glossy adult mags on the market.....what can yours offer that they dont already?

If you are thinking of doing the production and editing yourself you would have to invest in:

    - A Mac (or a PC) with decent display (€3000 +)
    - Proper back-up (€1000 +)
    - Software, either Quark Xpress, Adobe Creative Suite (€2500 - €3000)
    - Decent scanner for photos - Creo iQ Smart or similar (€10000 +)
    - Decent Proofer - Epson Stylus Pro 4800 or similar (€3000 +)
    - Proper camera - the sky is the limit.

Traning on the equipement & software to bring you to professional level could take a few years (depending on your current ability) at a cost of about €7000+ (that is a bit of a guess)

On top of that you will have sell advertising to make it worth while (no publication will depend on sales price). You would probably have to go to the likes of Easons as a distributor (I'd imagine it would be nigh on impossible to distribute on a large scale yourself)

Then you would have to do a deal with a Printer and schedule press times etc..

    It's not easy!!
