MPC used to play divx and xvid files fine but now its not playing xvid at all. how di fix this?? im guessing divx is trying to play the xvid files. is there any utility i can use on windows xp or mpc that tells it what codec to use for what file type??

Yep, Gspot should tell you what codec is required (and if you have it installed) for the file you are trying to play. Very handy tool.

uninstall any codecs you have installed.
    reinstall the ones you need.
avoid codec packs like the plague,
if you do use a pack, try not to install any more codecs on top of it ;)
