does anyone here have the above combination? I'm looking (still) to get a replacement for the kit lense and would be interested to have another owners opinion if possible. Especially compared to either the 17-85mm or the kits lense.

other lenses I'm looking at are canon 17-85 IS (looking more & more doubtful as I cant justify the extra spend for IS alone, and some of the reviews I've been reading havent exactly put it head and shoulders above the competition) and the Tamrom 17-50mm 2.8

To be honest, if you have a kit lens of the same aperture, you might aswell go for something else, even a 24-70? Or the 50mm prime? It's only 110 quid in a bricks and mortar shop, cheaper online!

its a better image I'm after rather then just extra range. I had a prime and sold it as I didnt really use it.

I have the 18-50mm, but I used it with a 20D. A friend uses it with a 350D. Excellent lens!

I've a 350D and I use an 18-50Sigma lens. It's f3.5-5.6. Paid about €80 for it. If it's anything to go by, I'd recommend the f2.8 as even the lens I have performs really well. I was surprised at how good it was as I only bought it as a stop gap til I got a better one.
