inspired by the gnome's thread 'to die or not' and the reaction to it, id like to ask this question.

if there was a button in front of you that if pressed would end humanity, would you press it?

there was a story posted here a few moons ago based along this but with a cheesy ending, i'll post if i can dig it out.

EDIT: link to story about about snake and lever and guy who has chance to end humanity. Here

    !! warning 22 pages !!

As much as I like to think I am the ruler and eventual destroyer of the universe, ultimately, in my heart I know I'm not, so I think a no to this one is in order.

Anyone remember that story someone posted about the Snake and the lever....that was great.
    Edit: I see it's been added :)

Regularly ponder the ethics of wiping out mankind, is it right to condemn everyone on the acts of the majority? So not sure depends on my mood at the time and what the most recent thoughts of people in my mind are I guess...
Clearly the world would be better without us but the question is do we deserve more chances?
Would also have to consider the method which humanity would be ended and the environmental impacts, would it affect other species or be completely specific to humans? Would it be humane or a slow and painful death? Would it truely be 100% effective or just be a population set-back?

Yes I think I would, just to see if it worked.

I remember when I was young there was an L.E.D. in one of the kitchen drawers for some reason,i asked my father what it was.He told me that it had a lethal gas inside and if it brke the gas would kill everyone in my estate, which at the age of 4 was whole world.
A few days later I decided to see just how lethal this gas was and broke it with the handle of a bread knife.I closed my eys and awaited my fate, nothing happened. It was a curious mixture of relief and disappointment.

I'd press it and then find out that it didnt work, then realise that it had a Wang sticker on the side of it and had been manufactured sometime in the 70s. :)

You were a strange little boy, weren't you?

Also, why would any of you push the button? You kill all your friends and family and we've done some good for the world.

But... but... but... there's beer! And cigarettes! And butter popcorn! And oral sex! And curry! And sunny days! And Sunday mornings! And garden centres! And hugs! And Buffy! And toast! And Terry Pratchett! And fresh coffee! And Friday evenings! And the Booker Prize! And Christmas Eves! And Jaws I, II and III! And being inside when it's raining! And clean sheets! And Gray's Anatomy! And Playboy! And AD&D computer games! And... and... and...

I mean, who would want to end humanity? Get out more, that's what I say.

Edit: Just read the snake story, brilliant :D Maybe I'll hold off pressing that button for now.

I wouldn't, because bad as the place is every so often you meet people who redeem your faith in humanity.

A few weeks ago I was in the states, and I was sittin down by a river near some homeless guys. Now, since it was the middle of summer there were bugs everywhere, and I was slapping the fuckers off my legs the whole time. Then one of the homeless guys walked over to me and handed me some bug spray. This guy had no home, he was deaf in one ear, hearing was almost gone in one ear, he was sitting on a park bench in the middle of summer, and yet he helped out someone he'd never met. Gave me the warm fuzzies so it did.

And thanks for the link to that snake thing, I was looking for it a while back.

that would bring a tear to a glass eye.

    i'd still press it though.

Has anyone read, "I have no mouth and I must scream"?
Man I love that story, the game is even better. Ellison wrote it himself and did an excellent job voicing the titular 'AM', really engaging, twisted and quite brilliant. 5 stars.

    What's this thread about again?

I'd rather a "press here to end *selective members of* humanity" button.
