Change the ram. thats value ram...no heatspreaders, cl5 is bad timing for 667mhz. Wouldnt do that E6600 justice. Notice it says industry standard, not enhanced latency.

    cough, cough, hint hint....Ram 4 sale: http://cgi.ebay.ie/OCZ-2Gb-2x1GB-DDR2-PC2-5400-Gold-GX-XTC_W0QQitemZ270013109115QQihZ017QQcategoryZ172QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
or Komplett have these on special offer this week only: http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=320721

    All else looks cool.
    good luck

You gonna need a floppy, unless youre gonna streamline your sata drivers in2 windows. Also get a dvd rom (only an extra few quids). Do you have a non oem copy of windows?

havent got a clue what you mean by this. streamline it? i hadnt planned on getting floppy drive, as i havent used one in years. but i suppose they are dirt cheap if it would help.

is the nec drive that i have there not the same thing? and i think i still have my old copy of windows, and if not, i can borrow my cousins copy ;)

If you dont plan on over-clocking dont bother changing the ram. Latency makes little difference to Conroe Performance.

Ok what he means is that XP doesn't natively have the drivers for your SATA drives, so, being as its an old OS, requires you to provide a floppy with the SATA drivers on it before installation so it can detect your SATA drives. You usually see something during install like "press f6 for third party SCSI/ATA Drivers". If you don't have a floppy drive you'll need to "streamline" a version of XP which means incorporating your SATA drives into the driver base on the XP CD which is a little complicated.

Your safest bet is to get a loan of floppy drive off a friend and just use it for the install, then you'll never need it again hopefully. What I would recommend is just to split the cost of an external floppy drive between a few friends and just let it do the rounds whenever it is needed.

    Q. Are you intending on OC'in that system at some stage?

I got caught out with that floppy thing on the last computer I built. Luckily I had a few old pcs with floppys lieing around. You only need the floppy for installing the hard drives so if you can borrow one.

That PC is preaty much along the same lines as what I was looking at the only thing I wa thinking about doing different was getting a 36gb 10,000 rpm hard drive for windows then a standard 200gb sata hard drive for files. but I don't know if it would make any difference to the speed of the system.

Huh? I've never needed to install drivers for SATA drives?

Newer motherboards fool windows into thinking its a Ide drive for windows installation.

 Is it a Dell pc? Dell streamline the drivers into their Windows Xp cd.

Ya, but dont get value ram without heatspreader. Good ram (OCZ, Gskill, corsair, crucial etc) doesn't cost much more & have lifetime warranty, value ram does not.

I was thinking that i might oc it at some stage, since i heard its quite easy, and the iceq thing on the his cards being very good for cooling. if i was to overclock it, is there anything else i'd need?

ok, i'll get the better power suply then, which would also probably be needed if i did go ahead and oc it, right? are these any good? http://komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=320547. cause the seasonic 600w are sold out (on komplett)

no, this is the card that i picked. it says its "core 2 duo", although i did hear that the 965x mobo's werent compatile...is this true?

Buy a cooler when you gonna oc. stock 1 do for now.

I think all 965 are conroe compatible and only the newer 975. Might be wrong tho. No sli or xfire on 965. only 975 has xfire. no boards at all for sli (yet).

I went for Ocz psu on ocuk. this 1 (2nd down) not on komplett: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_OCZ_241.html

Regarding a PSU, how are you with Ebay? I just bought this OCZ 700w (sorry to make you sick Pog ;) ) off ebay and even with shipping of €51 it still works out €30 cheaper than buying from OCUK with vat and shipping, the same price as OCUK's 600w OCZ. The guy is a power seller and has excellent feedback so he's trustworthy, plus he uses Paypal which is nearly always a sign of legitimacy. I can usually smell a rat and have never been caught out so he gets my approval. You take a chance with customs though but I like the risk :D I've slipped the net for 5 years now, i'm just waiting for the day i'm caught.

The OCZ GameXstream 700w gets my vote.

From what I read about the motherboards the 965 was supposed to be the board for the conroe but the ones already out wheren't compatable for some reason. The 975 was compatable but didn't fully support all the features of the conroe, now they've realised the full 965x boards with full features and there the best to get.

I'm totaly confused about this and I think I've got it wrong looking at the price of the intel boards on Overclockers.

Can anyone clear this up, it's really the only thing stopping me buying my new system. Seeing as I'm going to be spending a bit on this system, I want the good **** man.
