A Town Called Eureka

Another generic 'cooky town' show on sky one. In case you haven't seen the first episode it's about a secret town made as a safe haven for exceptionally intelligent people to work and invent junk for the american government. Of course all the inventions defy common sense even before science. I've only seen the first episode.

An early problem was with the solar powered car, which was really a car with a solar panal-esk paint job. They said it didn't operate in at night meaning that it has no adequate battery storage, yet the whole time it was running in a completly overcast day. Anal...yes.

Also just incase there would be some confusion. When something or someone creates something that breaks the laws of physics, it doesn't make physics as we know it fall apart untill it is turned off, it just never happens.

I'll try my best not to watch it again

Caught this a few weeks back and enjoyed it..

Solid script.. Colin Ferguson is fantastic, likeable and funny in the main role.. and an interesting premise!

Sitting down to watch episode 3 now actually.

Looking forward to it... didn't get to watch it last night.

Watched episode 8 of 'Saved' which was great stuff too.... and fell asleep at the opening credits of 'Eureka'

Only thing i can think of is if there's a show called 'Eureka' planned for broadcast or in (recent) past or present schedules!

Not exactly like anything in the title could be lost in translation or anything.

Why did they call "Roswell" "Roswell High"
Why have itv changed "Everwood" to "Our New Life In Everwood"
or BBC change "Lois and Clark" to "The New Adventures of Superman"
or lots of others I can't think of at the moment.

the answer is because they think their viewers are stupid and won't understand the original titles.

Don't forget "Smallville" became "Smallville - Superman: The Early Years"....

Still, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" became "Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone" for the US market, etc. Their condescension works both ways.

Usually i find the condecension works towards the americans.

Just watched the pilot last night. Good fun, but I'm not sure how long the premise will last (genius at work, oops, broke the world). Having said that, Colin Ferguson is great. I was sure he looked familiar, but I've not seen anything in his imdb cv, so he must just look like someone.

Never seen that guy before, either. I think the guy I'm thinking of is a brit actor. He sorta looks like a young bergerac :)

    two things

1 I think Fergeson looks like the guy from Earth : Final Conflict - Kevin Kilner (Boone)

2 in the second episode (not a spoiler, just a spoiled piece of dialogue) the main character (lapsed on his name!) asks the resident Mechanic / Shuttle Engineer / Coroner (regular scotty) about ghosts - to which the scientist (in his multi hat role) answers - well he believe in energy - people have energy - when they die the energy has to go some where - ergo.....

ugh! this alone makes it not worth watching, no where'd I put that 21 grams......

Very anal, and I hate to be anal myself but solar power does work in overcast conditions...

Solar panels react to Ultraviolet radiation (Photoelectric effect for anyone whos interested), which is the same part of the electromagnetic spectrum which gives you sunburn, and as anyone with fair skin such as myself knows well, you can still burn VERY easilly when its cloudy!!

To answer the original question, the reason they change names of TV programmes is often to do with copyright. I imagine the name Eureka is protected as a trademark (probably by the museum in Huddersfield of the same name), although I could be completely wrong on that one... Law isnt my strong point..

Well, that was quite a different show last night. A talking house, no sheriff, no Greg Germann (?), ghosts, criminal underuse of the deputy, not much witty dialog. It was all a bit meh, to be honest. One more chance, and then it's out to the woodshed.
